A pair of Haverhill High athletes highlighted last year’s winter swim season. Brian Story and Miles Bunyar broke several program records, captured four combined Merrimack Valley Conference titles, and one sectional title.
The two of them are back this season in what hopes to be the best season yet.
“We are looking forward to seeing this year’s graduating seniors finish what they started three years ago,” said head coach Dan Tanguay. “Each of the past three years, Haverhill has placed higher at sectionals and states than the previous year. We are also excited to have ten new swimmers on the team this year, after having no freshmen last year.”
Story captured the Division 1 North sectional title in the 500-freestyle last winter. He’s closing in on the program record in that event, which was set back in 1980, the last time the Hillies crowned a state champion in the 500-free. Story also owns school records in the 100-breast and 200-IM and is also looking to break the 100-butterfly and 100-freestyle records.
Bunyar won both the 100-meter freestyle and 100-meter backstroke at last year’s MVC Championship Meet.
Haverhill’s 200-medley relay team is also close to breaking the longtime record previously set in 1980.
