Central takes two
The Central Catholic girls lacrosse team defeated Pinkerton Academy, 17-6, on Saturday and then came back to beat MVC rival Chelmsford, 19-7 on Sunday to improve the team’s record to 5-0 on the young season.
Against Chelmsford, Kerri Finneran led the way with 5 goals, 4 assists and 5 draw controls. Abby Yfantopulous was also impressive on the draws with 8, while she added a goal and 2 assists. Also having strong games included Kierstyn Zinter with 3 goals and 4 draw controls, Olivia Rondeau with 4 goals, Nicolette Licare with 3 goals and 2 assists, while Cam Donlan and Jackie Tattan combined for three other tallies. Goalie Anne Cashman made 11 saves.
In the 17-6 win over Pinkerton Academy on Saturday, Finneran was immense with 4 goals, 4 assists and 12 draw controls. Licare added 4 goals and 3 assists and Rondeau finished with 3 tallies. Also contributing included Zinter with 2 goals and 3 draw controls, Tattan with 2 goals and Donlan and Sarah Wilson with 1 goal each. Cashman made 12 saves for the win.
In the losing effort, Hailey Schnider scored three Pinkerton goals, and Hannah Lisauskas added a goal and three assists.
St. George’s 11, Brooks 9
Lydia Tangney scored three goals, while Tilly Crosby and Sloan Hayden had two each for Brooks, which fell to 3-4. Ella Phillips made seven saves in net.
Methuen 18, Dracut 8
Brooke Carter, Kiera Fitzpatrick and Kate Fitzpatrick all scored four goals apiece for the Rangers, who led 8-2 at the break and pulled away. Tessa Therrien scored three goals – the first three of her varsity career. Allie Bolduc netted two, and Elizabeth Descheneaux scored once.
North Andover 11, Shrewsbury 3
Sam Melville was sharp in net with eight saves to backbone the Knights. Janie Papell scored twice and pitched in a pair of assists. Isa Robinson (including her 100th of her career) and Lauren Willoe each had two goals, and Meghan Daley delivered a goal and three assists in the win.
Phillips Andover wins pair
On Friday, Phillips defeated Pingree 10-8 before coming back to defeat Milton, 11-10 in overtime on Saturday. Against Pingree, Shea Freda and Neicia Smith led the way with three goals each and Charley Drouin had two. Goalie Molly Boyle was strong in the net with nine saves. Against Milton, Smith had 3 goals and 1 assist, Drouin and Lauren Herlihy had two goals each, and Maren Boyle scored twice, including the game winner.
Baseball
North Andover 7, Tewksbury 4
Dom Pefine worked five sharp innings of two-hit ball, striking out five for the win. Zach Faro and David Johnson (2 RBIs) each had a pair of hits at the top of the Knights’ order, so did Mike Phelps and Jeff LaVolpicelo.
Pinkerton 6 ,Winnacunnet 2
Jake Adrien and Mike Cioffi combined on a three-hitter for Pinkerton, which moved to 3-0 on Saturday with the win. Brendan Horne tripled in a pair, and Hunter Braiser delivered two of the Astros’ eight hits.
Central Catholic 14, Billerica 4
Jack Savio smacked three singles, driving in four runs and scoring a pair for the Raiders, who were the beneficiaries of seven free passes and a pair of hit-batsman by Billerica pitching. Brady Rickenbach drilled two doubles and drive in a pair. Connor McNamara singled and doubled in the leadoff spot, scoring two runs.
Milton Academy 6, Brooks School 5
Brooks was defeated for the third straight time by one-run. Lefthander Andrew Martin tossed the first five innings, giving up four runs. Offensively, Brooks had just six hits with Griffin Bucci the lone to have two, while, Shayne King, Henry Hebert, Connor Herlihy and Martin had one each.
Deerfield 6, Phillips Andover 2
Phillips dropped to 0-3 on the season despite strong performances at the plate from Luke Gallo (2 for 3, 2 runs), Jace Roosien (2 for 3 with 2 doubles) and Isaac Lamson (1 for 2 with RBI double). Mark Krystofolski went the first four innings on the mound and didn’t get a decision. He didn’t give up a hit, but walked four and struck out five.
Bishop Guertin 8, Windham 4
Chris Brearley had a two-run double and Jake Sullo and Alec Arinello each had a hit and drew two walks as the Jaguars were defeated by the Cardinals.
Softball
Brooks 5, Milton 4
Andover’s Jackie Giordano had the big day on both sides for the winners, who broke a 4-4 tie with a run in the bottom of the seventh. At the plate, she was 3 for 3, driving in two runs. In the circle, Giordano went the distance, allowing just one earned run on six hits while striking out seven.
Methuen 22, Lowell 1
Alexis Anthony and Sadie Putnam threw a combined four-hitter with 10 strikeouts. Allyssa Cassidy went 4 for 4 with five RBIs. Putnam, Ari Baez and Bella Medeiros had three hits apiece. The 3-0 Rangers allowed their first run of the season.
Whittier Tech 5, Blackstone Valley 3
The Wildcats broke into the win column by rallying from a 3-1 deficit. Giovanna Ohannesian had three hits for the Wildcats, while Maddie Noury and winning pitcher Kaylee Habib were strong at the top of the lineup, combining for four hits, three runs and three RBIs.
Dracut 10, Greater Lawrence Tech 5
Mya German and Jashley Lopez each had two hits for the 1-2 Reggies. Aysha Paula stood out defensively in center.
Boys Lacrosse
St. John’s-Shrewsbury 10, Pinkerton 7
Cole Summers and Ricky Wong each scored twice for the 2-1 Astros. Matt Morrison, Ben Quintilliani and Cody Santomassimo had the other goals. Owen Perkins made a dozen saves in the Pinkerton net.
Central 7, Lexington 5
Sean Tattan scored two goals and added two assists and Mason Bachry found the back of the net three times to lift Central Catholic to a non-league victory. Ryan Tighe added a goal and an assist and Conor Shanahan had the other tally. Joe Buchanan won 11 of 15 faceoffs and goalie Jake Lydon made 12 saves.
Pelham Invitational Track and Field
The Windham girls were eighth at the Pelham Invitational.
Katherine Klinger was the lone Jaguar winner, taking the 3,200 in 11:49.47. She was also third in the 1,600 in 5:30.10. Kelly Wright was second in the javelin at 96-11. Other Windham placers were Sedona Lee (5th, long jump, 15-1.5), Isabella Schreiner (6th, high jump, 4-6 and 6th, 100 hurdles, 18,57).
For the Windham boys, who were 11th, Kevin Brooks led the way, winning the 400 in 50.14. Cameron Williams cleared 5-8 for third in the high jump, while Brad Smith was fifth in the 1600 in 4:55.13.
Pelham’s Colby Crear won the 110 hurdles in 15.21 and was second in the 300 hurdles (39.62). He also cleared 5-8 for fourth in the high jump.
For the Python girls, Reese Nicolosi won the triple jump at 31-2.
Samantha Tetreault (17.12) and Ava Milley (17.46) went 2-3 in the 100 hurdles.
Gabrielle Minuti and Molly Coakley each cleared 7-6 for second and third in the pole vault.
Addison Keller was fourth in the discus (78-5) and shot put (29-0).
