WORCESTER — Brock Redner got the game winner unassisted with 7:25 left as Edmeston topped the host Wolverines in a Tri-Valley League match Monday, Sept. 14.
In a rematch of last year’s TVL championship, Edmeston gave Worcester its first loss of the season.
The Wolverines were in control for a lot of the first half, and struck first when Derek Land got a ball that had bounced off a defender and volleyed it into the net.
Edmeston tied the game with 3:48 left before halftime as Braedin McEnroe bodied a loose ball into the net while on the goalline following a long throw.
Worcester had a slim advantage on shots in the first half, 3-2, as well as a 5-2 lead in corner kicks.
However, at halftime, Edmeston Coach Dan Cheatham told his club they were getting their first real test of the season, and he challenged them to play better. He noted his team was playing to Worcester’s strength in the middle of the field and said he wanted them to play the ball up the sidelines instead.
Although both defenses were strong throughout, the offensive advantage shifted to the Panthers in the second half.
Edmeston outshot Worcester, 10-9, and each team took nine corner kicks.
Redner got his score unassisted after dribbling into the box from the left corner and then putting the ball toward the near post. Worcester goalie Paul Hahn appeared to get glove on the ball, but he couldn’t prevent it from going in the net.
Hahn and Edmeston’s Sire Champen each made five saves.
