Delaware Academy 70, Cooperstown 32
Danielle Ennist had a double double as host Delaware Academy started the season with an opening round win over Cooperstown in the Dick Alwine Tournament on Friday, Dec. 5, in Delhi.
Ennist had 15 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and five steals for the Bulldogs, which led at halftime, 35-20, then held Cooperstown to 12 points in the second half.
Rebecca Verspoor scored 15 points. Tyler Abts scored 14 points and had four steals. Jaylyn Prisco scored nine points and had five assists. Lexi Davis scored seven points.
Lanie Nelen scored 18 points to lead Cooperstown. Deanna Wolfe scored nine points and Sophia Johnson scored five points.
The Hawkeyes were without eighth grader Emma Johnson, their leading scorer last season, who has a stress fracture in her foot and started the season in a walking boot.
The game was a rematch of last year’s regional championship game March 15, in Dryden, won by Cooperstown, 55-48.
Delaware Academy (1-0) will play Greenwich at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 6, in the tournament final.
Greenwich beat Unatego in the other opening-round game.
Cooperstown (0-1) will play Unatego (0-1) at noon Saturday in the other tournament game.
Thursday Results GIRLS BASKETBALL
Oneonta 42, Windsor 26
Desiree Wheeler and Kendall LeFever each scored eight points as Oneonta won in the opening round of the Anthony C. Drago Tip Off Tournament on Thursday, Dec. 4, against visiting Windsor.
The Yellowjackets held the Black Knights to just two points in the second half and led at halftime, 23-9.
Jenevie Gallusser scored seven points, and Ella Harper and Lily Bridger scored six points each for the Yellowjackets.
Charlie Carr scored 10 points to lead Windsor.
Oneonta (1-0) will play Vestal in the girls varsity championship game, which is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 6.
Vestal beat Newark Valley in the other semifinal Thursday, 50-40. Newark Valley and Windsor will play in the consolation game Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Cooperstown 74, Utica Academy of Science 63
Miles Nelen scored a team-high 33 points as Cooperstown opened the season Thursday with a Center State Conference non-division win over Utica Academy of Science.
The game was tied at 37 at halftime before the Hawkeyes went on a 20-7 run in the third quarter.
Jackson Crisman had 19 points and 19 rebounds. Brody Murdock also scored 19 points.
Amari Berkley scored 36 points to lead UAS (0-2).
Cooperstown (1-0) will host Hamilton in a CSC Division III game Thursday, Dec. 11.
Stamford/Jefferson 56, Gilboa-Conesville/Roxbury 48
Max Eisel had a double double to lead Stamford/Jefferson to an early Delaware League win at Gilboa.
Eisel had 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Garrison Ross led G-C/R with 12 points, and Cody Ciaravino and Blake Albano each scored 11 points.
Pat Terk and Lelend Donato-Williamson each scored 13 points for Stamford/Jefferson (1-0, 1-0), which plays Oxford Academy to begin the Stamford Christmas Tournament on Monday, Dec. 8.
Gilboa-Conesville/Roxbury (1-1, 0-1) will play a Delaware League game at Margaretville on Wednesday, Dec. 10.
VOLLEYBALL
Cooperstown 3, Westmoreland 0
Jensen Merwin had nine aces and 12 digs as Cooperstown opened the season Thursday with a sweep of host Westmoreland in a Center State Conference Division II match, 25-17, 25-16, 25-8.
Chloe Jubar led the team in kills with five. Hayden Merwin led the team in assists with 15.
Cooperstown (1-0, 1-0) will play in the Dolgeville Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 6.
