MORRIS — Ryan Murphy scored a game-high 36 points as host Morris stayed undefeated in Tri-Valley League play with a 70-63 win over Schenevus on Thursday, Jan. 15.
Morris led after one quarter, 15-8, and pushed the lead to 10 to start the second quarter on Carter Swayer’s three-point basket. The Mustangs led at halftime, 33-26.
The Dragons opened the third quarter with consecutive baskets by Owen Green and then chipped away at the lead all period.
Although the Mustangs long-ball and defensive press proved to be too much for Schenevus, the Dragons had good success in the half-court set, with a size advantage down low and good ball movement.
Ethan Reed tied the game at 43 with a three-point basket from the top of the arc with 1:53 left in the quarter.
However, the Mustangs answered and dealt the Dragons a harsh blow when senior guard Allen Osborne picked up his fourth foul with nine seconds left in the quarter. Osborne sat for the first two minutes of the fourth quarter and fouled out with 3:30 left in the game.
Morris opened up a lead again, forcing turnovers with the press, and hitting on the long ball.
Murphy had three three-point baskets, Swayer had four, as part of his 20-point total, and Ryland Boss scored nine points on three treys.
Schenevus played most of the fourth quarter one basket away from a one-score game, but couldn’t convert down the stretch.
Morris went 4-for-6 from the foul line in the final minutes to finish the win.
Reed scored 17 points to lead the Dragons, which also got 10 points and 10 rebounds from Green, and nine points, seven assists from Osborne, and seven points from Lucien Kortekaas.
