Through two playoff games, the Newburyport girls lacrosse team has handled business as it should.
After a blowout victory over Medway in the first round, the No. 2-seeded Clippers kept the train rolling late Wednesday night. Thanks to a tremendous 7-goal, 2-assist effort from senior Maddie Heath, the Clippers easily punched their ticket back to the Division 3 Quarterfinals with a victory over No. 15 Holliston, 17-2.
It was a 13-0 game at halftime, and a running clock from then on out.
So as it now heads to another state quarterfinal, Newburyport (18-2) has won its two playoff games by a combined score of 34-5. The Clippers are three wins away from repeating as Division 3 State Champions, and will next host No. 7 Cape Cod Academy on Saturday at 3 p.m. — after the preceding Newburyport boys’ game concludes.
Besides Heath on Wednesday night, Reese Bromby netted a hat-trick, and both Rita Cahalane and Erin Marshall scored twice. Emma MacIsaac, Olivia McDonald and Lily Pilz were behind the final goals, and Cahalane also had four assists along with three draw control wins.
