EFFINGHAM — Even with a Jude Traub go-ahead layup with 19 seconds to go, the Effingham boys basketball team couldn’t find a way to finish.
The Flaming Hearts fell to Charleston, 57-56, on Tuesday night at Effingham High School after a Luke Bonnstetter layup with five seconds left gave the visitors a one-point lead.
“I saw it coming,” said EHS head coach Mack Thompson on Bonnstetter’s shot. “As soon as they flashed [Andrew Kuykendall] through, we followed him like a lost puppy dog and [Bonnstetter] put it over the top. [Nolan] Fearday was trying like heck to get through it, but we had nobody on that backside.”
Jenner Pals would get off a shot in the corner but missed it after it was well-defended by Charleston.
Traub finished with nine of his team-best 14 points in the final frame. All of those points came one after the other.
He started with a three-pointer, with 1:09 left, that cut the Charleston lead to four. Traub then made another three-pointer to slice the margin to one with 49 seconds to go and followed that with a three-point play after driving to the basket and getting his layup to drop. He made the free throw to put EHS ahead by one after Charleston split a pair of free throws on the other end.
“He hit some big shots for us,” Thompson said.
The Hearts were outscored 19-13 in the final quarter. They led 16-13 at the end of the first. Charleston outscored EHS 14-8 in the second to take a 27-24 lead into halftime.
Burk Anderson hit a pair of free throws to start the second. He then made a three-pointer that gave Charleston an 18-16 lead.
Jake Niebrugge answered with a three-pointer and Traub followed with one to put the Hearts back in front 22-18.
Bonnstetter made a three-point play with 3:53 left that cut the lead to one. Anderson then made a layup before back-to-back free throws by Bonnstetter, giving Charleston a 25-22 lead.
Traub made a layup to cut the lead to one. Bonnstetter then made two more free throws to equal the tally at halftime.
Ian Kinkelaar started the third quarter with a three-pointer that tied the game. Niebrugge then made one of his two free throws and hit a midrange shot to give EHS a 30-27 lead.
Max Buzzard hit a pair of foul shots. Niebrugge then made a layup with 5:12 remaining in the stanza to make it a 34-27 contest.
Pals made three three-pointers in the period.
“He can score the basketball,” Thompson said. “They went zone there for a couple of possessions. He and Kinkelaar both stepped up and hit a couple of big shots for us.”
Charleston battled back from down double-digits in the quarter to retake the lead.
“They came down and hit some quick shots,” Thompson said. “It’s one of those things where you want them shooting the ball quickly to give us the ball back in rhythm, but when they hit them, it’s like a dagger.”
The Hearts outscored Charleston 19-11 in the period.
Pals added 12 points. Niebrugge had 10. Kinkelaar had six. Fearday, Buzzard and Max Flack had four and Cole Phillips had two.
