HAVERHILL — An 18-year-old local man drowned while swimming at Plug Pond early Sunday afternoon, police said.
Police were notified at 1:30 p.m. of a possible drowning at the city’s only public swimming area.
“It appears to be a tragic accident,” Police Chief Robert Pistone said.
The Haverhill Police and Fire departments responded along with Trinity EMS, the city’s harbormaster, the Massachusetts State Police Dive Team and a dive team from Beverly.
Divers found the Haverhill teen’s body at 3:07 p.m. in a more than 20-foot-deep section of the pond outside the roped-off public swimming area, Pistone said. The name of the victim, who was at the beach with his family, has yet to be released.
It is not known why the teen was outside the designated swimming area, Pistone said.
Haverhill police and the Essex District Attorney’s Office are investigating the incident along with the state medical examiner’s office.
