Matt Rogers was announced as the new head coach of the Hartwick football team on Tuesday effective Monday, March 3.
“I am tremendously excited to welcome Matt to our Hawk family and can’t wait to work alongside him in building our football program into a highly competitive member of the Empire 8 Conference,” Executive Director of Athletics Paul Vecchio said in a press release.
“Matt’s experience of having played a significant role in being a part of football renaissances at both Utica and Morrisville, within the Empire 8 Conference, has provided a blueprint to him on what it takes to be successful in one of the strongest Division III football conferences in the country. In addition, Matt’s work ethic, energy, focus and integrity were all lauded by our search committee and his team’s outstanding performances on the offensive side of the ball have proven his strategic acumen. I am extremely excited about the future of Hawk football under Matt’s leadership.”
Rogers arrives at Hartwick after serving as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Wilkes University in 2024. Prior to that he spent three years at SUNY Morrisville as assistant head coach, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
“I am extremely excited to become the next Head Football Coach at Hartwick College,” Rogers said. “I am appreciative of President Mullen and Athletic Director Vecchio for trusting me with this opportunity. Going through the interview process, I was extremely impressed with the people I encountered. This is a place that wants to strive for excellence and that is something that I want to be a part of. Our football team will be tough, disciplined, and hard working, I can’t wait to get to work!”
A native of East Syracuse, Rogers began his coaching career at his alma mater Utica University, where he graduated in 2016 with a degree in journalism.
Rogers is an active member of the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). He earned his master’s degree in liberal studies in 2019 from Utica University.
SOFTBALL
SUNY Oneonta 3, Rutgers-Camden 0 SUNY Oneonta 4, Rutgers-Camden 3
The SUNY Oneonta softball team began its 2025 season on Tuesday with a pair of wins over Rutgers-Camden.
The Red Dragons won the first game by a score of 3-0. Emily Brown tossed a two-hit shutout in the circle, finishing with eight strikeouts and five walks.
Brown also went 3-for-3 with a double at the plate while Julia Serena had a double and two RBI.
In game two, Oneonta won 4-3. Jamie Cardello led the offense with two hits, including a double, and an RBI. Serena and Cailin Hall also had two hits apiece.
Tanner Smith picked up the win after allowing just one run in four innings.
The Red Dragons will take on Rowan (NJ) in another doubleheader on Wednesday.
SUNY Delhi 7, Vermont State Lyndon 6 SUNY Delhi 14, Vermont State Johnson 1
SUNY Delhi also opened its season on Tuesday with a doubleheader as the Broncos were in Myrtle Beach to begin 2025.
Delhi opened the day with a 7-6 extra-innings win over Vermont State Lyndon. Rylee Falcon drove in the game-winning run with an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth, one of her two RBI in the win.
Danielle Seymour went 3-for-3 with three RBI while Stephanie Huckabee and Hannah Caughey each had doubles.
Alethea Ferrara was the winning pitcher after tossing six innings out of the bullpen.
Delhi then proceeded to rout Vermont State Johnson 14-1. Cayla Moroni led the offense by going 4-for-4 with a double and four RBI. Samantha Martin went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
Danielle Seymour picked up the win, striking out five batters in five innings.
Delhi will face both teams again in another doubleheader on Wednesday.
MEN’S LACROSSE
Hartwick 12, Oswego State 11
The Hartwick men’s lacrosse team held off Oswego State 12-11 in its season opener on Tuesday.
The Hawks recovered from an early 7-3 deficit to take a 12-8 lead in the fourth quarter before surviving a late rally by the Lakers.
Garrett Frost and Colin August each had hat tricks in the win while Spencer Hogaboom, Mason Adams, Colby Simonetti, Luke Ward, Matthew Locasto and Taharihwakohe Lazore all had goals as well.
Kaiden Johnson came up with 17 saves as the winning goalie.
Hartwick will visit Farmingdale State on Saturday.
