The recipients of Hands Healing Heroes’ two annual educational scholarships recognize two outstanding young adults whose lives have been shaped by military service, leadership, and a commitment to serving others.
The 2026 Angelo Onevelo Memorial ROTC/Military Scholarship has been awarded to Nathanial Patterson, a graduate of Niagara Wheatfield High School. Established in memory of local veteran Angelo Onevelo, this scholarship recognizes a Niagara County graduating senior who exemplifies leadership, character, community involvement, and a commitment to military service through enlistment or ROTC.
Nathanial’s essay reflected a mindset rooted in discipline, service, and personal growth. He wrote that he has “always believed that life should be about more than just getting by or taking the easy path” and that military service represents “a chance to become the best version of myself while serving something bigger than my own personal goals.”
Inspired by his father’s nearly 30 years of honorable military service, Nathanial plans to continue that legacy by serving in the United States Army National Guard while pursuing his education at the University at Buffalo. He also distinguished himself through volunteerism, academic and athletic achievement, and a clear willingness to challenge himself in pursuit of purpose, growth, and service.
The 2026 Hands Healing Heroes College Student of a Veteran Scholarship has been awarded to Owen Berger, a graduate of Lockport High School. This scholarship honors a student whose life has been positively influenced by the service and sacrifice of a veteran parent.
Owen’s thoughtful essay reflected on the profound impact of his father’s service in the United States Army, including his deployment to Bosnia, and demonstrated a deep appreciation for the freedoms preserved by our nation’s veterans and the sacrifices made to do so.
This fall, Owen will attend the University at Buffalo, where he plans to pursue a degree in Aerospace Engineering. His outstanding academic achievements, leadership, involvement in music, STEM organizations, and community service made him an exceptional choice for this year’s award.
Finally, Hands Healing Heroes extends its sincere gratitude to every student who applied for this year’s scholarships and the veterans who inspired them. While selecting only two recipients was a difficult task, each application reflected the character, leadership, and potential of an extraordinary generation of young adults. It was a privilege to read their stories, and we are encouraged by the bright future they represent for our community and our nation.
Hands Healing Heroes looks forward to recognizing Nathanial and Owen during the 13th annual Veterans Appreciation Day on Sept. 26 at Niagara Falls High School. It is especially meaningful that these outstanding young men will be introduced to the very veterans whose courage, sacrifice, and service inspired their scholarship awards. We invite the community to join us in celebrating both our nation’s heroes and the next generation they continue to inspire.
