HANCEVILLE —Hanceville is tidying up its statutory books ahead of an expected measure next month that, if approved, would clear the way for tattoo and body piercing services to begin operating inside the city.
Aug. 8, the Hanceville City Council held its first reading of a new ordinance aimed at amending the city’s existing zoning laws to accommodate tattoo and related businesses. With a public hearing on the measure already slated to take place next month ahead of an expected second reading, the council took no further action on the ordinance after its introduction at the council’s Aug. 8 meeting.
In addition to proposing criteria that would limit and regulate the location, operating hours and other requirements for tattoo and body piercing businesses, the ordinance also aims to amend the city’s existing 2006 zoning ordinance, which does not allow for such businesses within any currently established zone. The amendment would introduce a new zoning category for tattoo and body piercing services seeking to operate within the city.
The council has scheduled a public hearing on the measure for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, to be held at the start of its regular meeting. The ordinance will likely also be up for action as an agenda item following the hearing, meaning the council could act either to adopt, table or decline the ordinance following the public hearing.
