After seven years as Gloucester police chief and more than 30 in law enforcement, Edward G. Conley III has officially retired from the department.
Conley announced his retirement in October of last year and his last day on the job was Saturday, Feb. 28.
“It was the honor of my career to serve here in Gloucester and I’m proud of all we accomplished in the last seven years,” Conley said.
Assistant Police Chief Michael Williams will serve as acting chief through the search process which the city is set to begin soon.
The first step for the city will be selecting the members of the screening committee. Once its members are selected, they will review and evaluate candidates. To help with this, MGT Impact Solutions, a recruitment and assessment consultant with expertise in public safety executive searches, will guide the committee through the process.
“Throughout his tenure, Chief Conley led the Gloucester Police Department with integrity, steadiness, and a deep commitment to public service,” Mayor Paul Lundberg said. “His focus on modernization, transparency, and strengthening trust between officers and the community has left a lasting impact on Gloucester. The progress made under his leadership, including restructuring department management, has built a strong foundation for the future. On behalf of our entire city, I thank Chief Conley for his years of dedicated service and wish him continued health and happiness in retirement.”
