The Gloucester boys hockey team couldn’t have asked for a better start on their home ice Thursday evening to open up the Cape Ann Savings Bank Holiday Tournament.
Hosting a talented and unbeaten Medfield team, the Fishermen skated out to a 2-0 lead after one period. Cam Amero and Colby Warren each found the back of the net, with assists going to Lukas Albano and Cade Cooper.
Resilient Medfield bounced back, however, netting two goals of its own in the second stanza to knot things up at 2-2 heading for home. Neither team was able to score in a decisive third period, forcing overtime at Talbot Rink.
After five minutes of 4-on-4 OT, the two teams still remained tied. That forced one more overtime period, a five-minute, 3-on-3 clash, and Medfield ultimately potted the game-winner to walk away with a thrilling decision.
Gloucester will get a chance to redeem itself on Friday when it takes on Medford — which fell to Marblehead, 7-2, earlier Thursday evening — in the CASB consolation round for a 6 p.m. puck drop. Medfield, meanwhile, will take on Marblehead for the championship at 8 p.m.
