The records and the accolades are great, but Methuen track superstar sprinter Lauren Quarm is driven by one goal, above all else.
She wants to win.
“The beauty of how Lauren races is that her mindset is always winning,” said Methuen High girls and sprints coach Brittany Carpio. “Her desire is her best asset. Every time she stepped onto the track this season, she competed with grit, heart and tenacity.”
After a historic winter, Quarm becomes the first Eagle-Tribune girls indoor track Athlete of the Year from Methuen High.
And she’s just a sophomore!
This winter, in the 55-meter dash, Quarm won the Massachusetts Meet of Champions title in a school-record 6.95. That was the third fastest time in Massachusetts history and the fourth time she broke the Rangers’ all-time mark, previously owned by Eagle-Tribune All-Star Wileshka Samuel.
Quarm also won the MVC Meet title in a meet-record 7.11, placed second at the Division 1 Meet (7.08) and third at New Englands (7.05).
In the 60-meter dash, she placed ninth in the championship division (top tier) at New Balance Nationals (7.50), breaking her own school record.
Quarm anchored the 4×200 team that broke the Methuen school record (1:47.81).
She was an Eagle-Tribune All-Star as a freshman last winter and last spring in the 100-meter dash, running an area-best 12.31.
“Lauren exceeded expectations this year, but what I’m most proud of is her competitiveness,” said Carpio. “It was great to see her find her ability to strategically race and capitalize on it. We are very proud of her.”
