Have you noticed how many beautiful fall days we’ve had over the past week? The weather, temperature and air have just been incredible.
When the conditions are like this, I refer to this time as the waning of summer into fall.
It comes annually and lasts for only around two weeks or so.
The mornings are cool, afternoons get warm and the evenings cool down before nightfall’s crisp, cold air takes over. It’s perfect for early morning or evening while wearing a jacket.
These days are short in number, so I encourage you to get out, enjoy the weather, our community, and the world.
For in a matter of just a couple of short weeks, we’ll be turning the clocks back and have less daylight.
There are a multitude of activities available in the area right in our own backyard this weekend.
The Knights of Columbus will host Crossville Oktoberfest this Friday and Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. There’s great fun with German music and food like chicken or port schnitzel, bratwurst, knackwurst or Weisswurst, several sides, and of course a wide variety of beer for the adults. Food is served until 8 p.m.
There is a lot of fun, celebrating with German music and dancing. Where else and how often do you get the opportunity to do the Chicken Dance? If you’re too bashful or unfit for the dance floor, watching the dancers is also entertaining.
The Knights of Columbus is a charitable fraternal organization of Catholic men who raise funds for a variety of nonprofit organizations in the community. Some of the agencies in Cumberland County that receive support from the KofC include: ARC of Cumberland County, Avalon Center, Christian Counseling Center, Hilltoppers, Hospice of Cumberland County, House of Hope, Plateau Pregnancy Services, St. Alphonsus Community Services, Stephens Center and the Cumberland County Veterans Assistance Council.
Council 8152, comprising members from St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Crossville and St. Christopher Parish in Jamestown, has sponsored Crossville Oktoberfest since 1991. The event is at the Knights of Columbus 2982 Hwy. 70 E.
Another fun-filled charity event this weekend is the Upper Cumberland Bigfoot Festival. The event is Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and offers several activities and contests on the main stage in the arena. There also several vendors who set up with a ton of Bigfoot, or Sasquatch-related merchandise, and of course, there’s always great food. There will be a variety of food trucks at the event.
Several Bigfoot-related celebrities and special guests attend and offer presentations and meet and greet opportunities. This year, there will be a reunion of Mountain Monsters including Huckleberry, Buck and Wild Bill. Also, they will be joined by Turtleman and Swampman.
All proceeds from the event go towards veterans.
I also encourage just getting outside and taking a walk in the downtown area, Cumberland Mountain State Park or Obed River Park. The fall colors are beginning to appear and offer a beautiful backdrop to all outdoor activities.
Go outside. Spend time with family. Call your out-of-town family. Call your friends. Tell your family and friends you love them.
Enjoy our community. Take care of yourselves. Do something kind for a stranger. Do something kind for your family.
Enjoy life and don’t spread hate.
Enjoy the waning summer into fall weather.
