OAKLAND — Firefighters from three counties battled a Garrett County barn fire Saturday afternoon that is under investigation by the state marshal’s office.
The fire reported just after 2 p.m. on Pleasant Valley Road caused significant damage, according to Oakland Volunteer Fire Department Capt. John Savage.
“When the first unit arrived on the scene, they reported heavy fire showing,” Savage said. “We requested a tanker task force to supply crews with water.”
Savage said fire hydrants were not available at the scene and fire trucks were used to shuttle water to firefighters.
The barn contained hay and chickens, according to Savage.
No injuries were reported in the incident, Savage said.
The Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s is investigating the fire, Savage said.
Units from Garrett County and Preston, Mineral and Grant counties in West Virginia responded to the blaze.
Allegany County units transferred to Garrett while units operated on the incident, according to an Allegany County Joint Communications Center spokesperson.
A second blaze ignited on Shady Dell Road after embers blew from the initial barn fire into brush, according to Savage.
“It’s the nature of firefighting,” Savage said. “Embers from the barn fire blew over and started a brush fire that was contained within approximately 15 minutes.”
Savage estimated that approximately 75 firefighters operated between both incidents.
“Thank you to our mutual aid departments for coming together and helping out on Saturday,” Savage said.
The fire marshal’s office was not immediately available for comment Sunday.
