EFFINGHAM — St. Anthony senior Lilly Gannaway stepped up when her team needed her the most.
Confidence, scoring-wise, has been lacking for the guard this season, as she’s struggled to find the bottom of the basket.
Gannaway finally had that game her coaching staff was looking for on Monday night against Salem, scoring 15 points in the Bulldogs’ 56-38 win at the Enlow Center.
“We worked on her shot a little bit and she came out and hit two threes,” head coach Bart Wiedman said. “That’s only going to build her confidence.”
Senior Nancy Ruholl led the team with 17 points.
Junior Ali Kollmann had eight points, while junior Addie Lauritzen added six points.
“I thought our posts — Ali and Addie — were fantastic,” Wiedman said.
Sophomore Jackie Vonderheide also scored six points in the win.
St. Anthony (12-6) led 10-8 in the first quarter following a hoop from Lady Wildcats senior Jordan Kessler.
Salem didn’t get any closer than that the rest of the game, as the Bulldogs went on a 14-0 run that ended the first quarter and spilled into the second. St. A led 20-8 at the end of the first frame and 34-16 at halftime.
“We were playing really good basketball,” Wiedman said. “We were flying all over the court defensively and executing. I was calling different plays every single trip down the floor and we were running every single one of them.”
The Bulldogs extended their lead to 21 points after the third, leading 47-26, before the Lady Wildcats outscored St. Anthony 12-9 in the final period.
“We knew everything was going to be running through (Kessler),” said Wiedman on his team’s gameplan against Salem.
Kessler led the Lady Wildcats (12-8) with 15 points. She scored the 1,000th point of her career on a free throw in the fourth quarter.
Sophomore Katee Sellers had six points. Senior Marah Johnson had five points. Senior Hannah Smith and sophomore Addy Lever had three points and senior Kale Benjamin, junior Allie Hustedde and freshman Kinnley Eagan had two points.
