FRANKFORT — Micah Gallegos is moving on after more than a decade as Traverse City Christian’s athletic director, but not too far.
Gallegos is taking over as Frankfort’s new athletic director after Joe Hollenbeck retired.
“I’m going to miss Traverse City Christian,” Gallegos said. “We accomplished a lot of the years.”
In his 10 years as AD with the Sabres, TC Christian has won three bowling state championships, seen the volleyball program capture four district and three regionals crowns and witnessed the boys hoops teams win its first two district titles the last two seasons. TC Christian also brought back boys golf as a sport and is fielding a stand-alone boys soccer team this fall instead of a co-op with Traverse City St. Francis.
Gallegos was chosen as one of the 14 regional Athletic Director of the Year recipients from the the Michigan Interscholastic Athletic Administration Association for the 2023-24 school year.
At Frankfort, he’ll also have the title of dean of students in addition to athletic director.
His contract starts in July, but Gallegos has already started some work on meeting with coaches and staff.
Frankfort recently hired new coaches for football, volleyball and girls basketball.
“Frankfort has a pretty awesome culture for sports,” Gallegos said. “They really love their sports. The entire town rallies around sports. That’s really appealing.”
The 1994 Traverse City Central grad is going into his 17th year as an athletic director, having previously work in the same capacity in Indiana and New Mexico prior to Traverse City Christian. He graduated from Indiana Wesleyan and earned his master’s degree in educational leadership from Indiana.
Frankfort will be the first school he’s served as athletic director that has football, skiing and wrestling.
