BROWNSVILLE, Pa. — No. 24 Frostburg State’s two-game win streak came to an end on Saturday, falling 31-26 to California (Pennsylvania).
There were touchdowns scored in all three phases of the game.
The teams combined for three special teams touchdowns and one on defense, along with three offensive scores and three field goals.
The scoring began with 6:20 left in the first quarter on a 42-yard pick-six by Malachi Thomas to put the Vulcans (6-3) in front 7-0.
On the ensuing kickoff, Osman Fanny went 92 yards to the house to even the score for the Bobcats (7-2).
Late in the first quarter, California’s Kendrick Agenor scored from five yards out to put the Vulcans ahead 14-7 after one.
In the opening minute of the second quarter, Mountain Ridge graduate Tyler Cook hit a 37-yard field goal for Frostburg.
Deontae Williams returned the ensuing kickoff for an 87-yard touchdown.
Cook hit another 37-yarder with three minutes before halftime, then Marquise Allsup returned a blocked punt 23 yards to cut the Vulcan lead to 21-19.
Harry Radcliffe added a 23-yard field goal in the third quarter for California.
Agenor scored from the four with 9:42 to play, stretching California’s lead to 31-19.
Tanner Pfeuffer rushed for a six-yard touchdown with 2:02 to play, but the Bobcats failed to recover an onside kick.
Pfeuffer was 13 of 34 for 117 yards and two interceptions.
KJ Smothers led FSU with 67 rushing yards on 15 carries, while Agenor led both teams with 99 yards on 18 attempts with two scores.
Jaylen Boyd and Kurt Thomas tied for a team-high six tackles, with Boyd adding a half sack and 1.5 tackles for loss for the Bobcats.
Keith Charney led both squads with 12 tackles and an interception for the Vulcans.
Frostburg plays its final regular season home game against West Virginia State on Saturday at 1 p.m..
