SHIPPENSBURG, Pa — Fueled by a cleansheet from Allegany grad Katie Sterne and a late goal by Catherine Smith, Frostburg State outlasted Shippensburg, 1-0, Thursday to open its season.
Smith scored off a Carolyn DeSena corner kick in the 85th minute, and Sterne made three saves en route to her second career shutout in goal.
Frostburg State out-shot Shippensburg, 7-6. Shippensburg took one more corner kick, 5-4.
Sterne, a senior, is in her first year as the Bobcats’ starting keeper following a quick recovery from surgery for a broken leg back in November.
Sterne is a former area Goalkeeper of the Year at Allegany, sharing the award with Hailey Ternent in 2019.
Frostburg State is coming off a 17-3-2 season in which it advanced to the Division 2 NCAA Tournament.
The Bobcats (1-0) are action against Indiana (Pa.) at the MD Soccerplex in Boyds on Saturday at 3 p.m.
