CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The defense was smothering, the offense provided some Smothers and Frostburg State smothered its way to its first-ever Division II playoff win.
Coming up with big play after big play, the Bobcats (10-2) upended Johnson C. Smith, 21-7, on Saturday afternoon in their Division II playoff debut.
After winning the toss and deferring to the second half, Wylan Harich came up with the first big play by the Frostburg defense, intercepting a pass at the Bobcat 24.
Frostburg State’s ensuing drive was halted at the Golden Bulls 24 when TyQueron Hines picked off a pass, but the Bobcats forced a punt four plays later and Austin Paul-Umstead returned it 48 yards to the JCS 32.
The Bobcats went for it on fourth-and-5 from the JCS 27, where the Golden Bulls had an interception called back on an offside penalty.
FSU got down inside the 10, but a 20-yard field goal try was unsuccessful.
The Bobcats again came up with an interception in the first quarter, with Marquise Allsup stopping a Golden Bulls drive near midfield.
Frostburg broke the deadlock two plays later, with KJ Smothers darting 41 yards for a score.
Brandon Keen booted the first of his three point-after tries for a 7-0 lead with 40 seconds left in the first.
Defensive back Will Burns came up with a sack on third-and-6 to stop the ensuing Golden Bulls drive, and Smothers again made them pay with a two-yard plunge and 14-0 lead with 12:37 to go before the break.
Johnson C. Smith got into Frostburg State territory on the next drive, with a 21-yard pass from Kelvin Durham to Deandre Proctor.
After an illegal shift penalty set up a first-and-15 at the FSU 44, Christian Taylor sacked Durham twice on the next three plays to give the ball back to the Bobcats.
By the time halftime rolled around, the Frostburg defense hauled in two interceptions, had four sacks and forced three punts for a 14-0 lead.
Taylor finished with four sacks, including three in the first half and on the last play of the opening half for an 11-yard loss.
The Golden Bulls (10-2) finally broke through late in the third.
After getting stuffed on third-and-1 at the Frostburg 6, JCS went for it on fourth-and-2, spreading it out and finding the end zone when Durham hit Proctor on a slant pattern.
Durham was 18 of 28 through the air for 219 yards, most of which went to Proctor, who had 14 catches for 139 yards.
Lucasz Smolen booted the PAT to halve Frostburg’s lead to 14-7 with 4:04 to play in the third.
The Golden Bulls appeared to have all the momentum when they forced a punt on the ensuing FSU drive, but Frostburg State punter Sam Dominguez pinned JCS at its own 1.
The teams traded punts, with Frostburg State’s first drive of the fourth quarter lasting all of 54 seconds before giving the ball back to the Golden Bulls.
The Bobcats quickly snatched back big mo, recovering a fumble on Johnson C. Smith’s third play from scrimmage at the FSU 30.
Brooks ensured the ensuing Bobcat drive wouldn’t be another quick one, hitting Cruiz Paul-Umstead for a gain of 31 on third-and-10 to move the sticks.
Cruiz Paul-Umstead was FSU’s leading receiver, hauling in four passes for 92 yards. Brooks finished 7 of 23 for 179 yards.
Smothers gained eight and two yards on the ground to again move the chains, and Owen Doyle had runs of 14 and 4 to get down to the JCS 11.
Smothers was stuffed on the next play and then a Bobcat pass toward the end zone sailed wide of the mark.
Frostburg State opted to go for it on fourth-and-6 instead of trying a 28-yard field goal, having already missed a 20-yarder in the first quarter. The Bobcats’ fourth-down pass was batted down near the goal line.
Despite not extending its lead, Frostburg State ran 5:52 off the clock on the drive.
After the Golden Bulls got a first down, Taylor came up with his fourth sack, this one for a 10-yard loss and forcing JCS to punt three plays later.
Taking over at the FSU 37, Smothers took the next three plays six, 15 and 19 yards to reach the Golden Bulls 23.
Doyle ran five yards on the final play before the two-minute warning, with JCS still possessing all three of its timeouts. Doyle finished with 19 rushes for 95 yards.
After calling a timeout on Doyle’s second-down run for no gain, Smothers ran for 13 on third-and-5 to get down to the JCS 5.
Three plays later, Smothers extended FSU’s lead to 21-7 with a five-yard run. Keen booted the PAT with 56 seconds left that put the score at its final.
Smothers finished as the Bobcats’ leading rusher with 115 yards on 16 carries.
The Bobcats outgained JCS, 367-269, including a 188-50 advantage on the ground.
Johnson C. Smith entered the game averaging 36 points and 405 yards per game.
The win, coming in Frostburg State’s Division II playoff debut, sets up a trip to California, Pennsylvania, for the second time this month.
Cal U (9-3), likely needing to win its final three regular-season games to make the playoffs, sparked what is currently a four-game win streak with a 31-26 win over the Bobcats on Nov. 1.
The Vulcans won on the road Saturday at Virginia Union, 27-24.
The winner of next week’s matchup will take on the other regional semifinal winner, Assumption (9-3) or Kutztown (12-0).
