MILLERSVILLE, Pa. — A 90-minute weather delay slowed Frostburg State’s momentum, but the Bobcats held on to defeat Millersville, 42-34, on Thursday night.
The Bobcats (2-0) led 14-0 before the stoppage due to lightning and pushed their margin to 21-0 following an eight-yard touchdown pass from Myles Fulton to Max Heineman, Fulton’s third aerial score of that game to that point.
Millersville scored 17 of the next 24 points, pulling within 28-24 after Trent McDowell’s 25-yard field goal with 7:50 left in the third quarter.
Owen Doyle answered with a 35-yard touchdown run that capped an 88-yard Frostburg scoring drive, and the defense iced the game when Lance Blankenship recovered a Millersville fumble in the end zone for a touchdown with 2:45 to play.
Millersville began that drive down 35-27 before the costly miscue.
Millersville scored a late touchdown to get within 42-34 but kicked the ensuing onside kick out of bounds.
Doyle converted a 4th-and-1 with a two-yard run to allow the Bobcats to run the clock out.
Frostburg State made a quarterback change at the end of the first half, turning to Jordan Brooks.
Brooks completed 5 of 7 passes for 129 yards and a touchdown in relief of Fulton, who was 10 for 17 with 136 yards and three TDs.
Cruiz Paul-Umstead had three receptions for 114 yards and a touchdown.
Doyle led the Bobcats’ ground game rushing for 83 yards on 17 carries. Landon Alexander had 57 yards on seven rushes.
Millersville’s Ryan Zeltt was 19 for 37 with 261 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Frostburg’s Tristin Forby and Kamari Ramsey had interceptions.
Frostburg State’s run defense held Millersville to 102 yards on 41 carries. The Bobcats gained 169 yards on 37 rushes.
Frostburg State takes its bye next week before a home matchup with Mountain East Conference foe West Liberty on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 1 p.m.
