FROSTBURG — Davis & Elkins held Frostburg State without a shot on goal, leading to a 2-0 shutout win on Wednesday at Bobcat Stadium.
“We weren’t good enough, made a mistake early, kinda got us caught chasing the game,” Frostburg head coach Keith Byrnes said. “Then they got a second, we didn’t really respond well enough offensively. I thought we played okay, possessed well again, but creating chances in the final third, we weren’t dangerous enough.”
The Bobcats (2-3-1, 2-2-0 Mountain East Conference) fell behind after an early mistake by goalkeeper Jan Foret.
About 10 minutes into the first half, Foret attempted to kick the ball to one of his teammates just outside of the goalie box.
The ball went directly to Franciso Lopez Kreik of the Senators (2-1-3, 2-0-2 MEC) who fired it down the middle to open the scoring for Davis & Elkins.
“It’s never helpful when it’s a mistake,” Byrnes said of the way the first goal was scored. “I don’t think it threw us off too much, but it made us chase the game a little bit more rather than feel like we’re in control of it because we needed a goal already. But they had a nice goal, we didn’t defend it well.”
With about 10 minutes remaining in the first half, Joao Cavaletti sent a cross to Hugo Fauli who buried a shot in the top right corner.
The Senators led 2-0 at halftime, leading 6-1 in shots and 3-0 on goal.
Davis & Elkins combined for nine shots in the second half while Frostburg was held to four.
“We just started pushing numbers forward and tried to make them defend,” Byrnes said. “They didn’t need the goals anymore, so it lends itself to us being allowed to at least playing on their half of the field. But again, I think we just need more scoring opportunities.”
Davis & Elkins finished with a 15-5 advantage in shots and 8-0 lead on goal.
The Senators also led 7-6 in corner kicks.
“They certainly played well, I think sometimes we rush things,” Byrnes said of the lack of offense. “We don’t get our heads up in time to see the right decision maybe and take the first option instead of the best option. But they’re a good team, they played well defensively.”
Foret finished with six saves for the Bobcats.
Frostburg heads to Point Park (3-3, 3-2 MEC) in Pittsburgh on Saturday at 1:15 p.m.
“We gotta move on, can’t worry about it and we gotta get focused on Point Park,” Byrnes said of his postgame message. “Try to get three more points on the road now.”
