FROSTBURG — After leading 10-0 after one quarter, it became a nail-biter for Frostburg State at Bobcat Stadium on Saturday.
Trailing 24-23 after a blocked extra point, the Bobcats (8-2, 6-1 Mountain East Conference) got two key stops and the go-ahead score to win 29-24.
With 12:43 to play, Kaleb Jackson went deep to Amare Ary for a 63-yard touchdown to put the Yellow Jackets (5-5, 4-3 MEC) in front 24-23.
Ary caught four passes for 86 yards and a score.
The Bobcats answered with a 14-play, 75-yard drive that ended on a one-yard touchdown run by Owen Doyle.
Doyle scored three touchdowns and led both teams with 117 yards on 22 carries.
Frostburg failed the conversion to keep the score 29-24 with 5:38 to play.
West Virginia State faced fourth and two at its own 40, and Rainer Haveland made the stop for a turnover on downs.
On the ensuing Bobcat drive, Doyle fumbled and Daryl Fletcher recovered for the Yellow Jackets with 1:36 left.
Two plays later, Johnson’s pass was intercepted by Tristin Forby to seal the win.
Frostburg led 10-0 after one quarter on a 30-yard Tyler Cook (Mountain Ridge) field goal and a seven-yard run by Doyle.
Jojo Restall scored from 11 yards out in the second quarter for West Virginia State before Tony Hornbuckle tied the game at 10 with a 40-yard field goal.
Restall led the Yellow Jackets with 113 yards on 19 carries with two scores.
Restall scored another 11-yard touchdown early in the third quarter before the Bobcats answered on a 76-yard completion from Brooks to Jevonn Gilyard.
Gilyard caught two passes for 85 yards and a score, while Brooks completed 15 of 24 passes for 213, one touchdown and one interception.
Wylan Harich, Jaylen Boyd, Kurt Thomas and Amari Johnson each recorded six tackles for the Bobcats.
Mike Wilson led both teams with 10 tackles for West Virginia State.
Doyle scored from two yards out in the opening minute of the fourth quarter.
Frostburg heads to Fairmont State for the regular season finale on Saturday at noon.
