FROSTBURG — The House and Garden Club of Frostburg is looking for volunteers to continue the tradition of planting and maintaining the more than 60 lamppost flower baskets on Main Street, Broadway and Water streets.
Several volunteers have retired, creating an opportunity for new volunteers to contribute their time and energy to keep historic downtown Frostburg colorful with lamppost baskets full of flowers in the spring and summer, and filled with greenery and lights for the winter holidays.
Volunteers are also needed to sign up to take a weekly shift keeping the five lamppost baskets at the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad depot watered or by serving as a substitute for full-time volunteers who are on vacation.
The club provides volunteers with $40 per basket to purchase plants, soil and fertilizer in the spring and the club purchases lights for the baskets for the holiday season. Pine is donated from several area tree farms.
Funding for the lamppost basket program comes from a portion of Frostburg hotel/motel tax revenue, club fundraising projects and individual donations through Foundation for Frostburg. To support the project, donations can be made through the Foundation for Frostburg at P.O. Box 765, Frostburg, MD 21532. Download a form at http://foundationforfrostburg.org/give.html and indicate House and Garden Club of Frostburg.
The lamppost Christmas wreath project has a separate fund and contributions to that project can be made on the same form.
