The Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge will host its first-ever Family STEAM Day: From Atoms to Art from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. EDT Saturday, Oct. 25.
Families are invited to enjoy a full day of hands-on science and art activities throughout the museum at 461 West Outer Drive. Family STEAM Day has been selected as a signature event of the statewide Tennessee STEAM Festival.
Programming will take place in the museum’s gymnasium, Imagination Gallery, and the Kids Go Green! Environmental Center and Gardens.
In the gardens, children can make botanical cyanotypes, blow bubbles with handmade wands, and paint using brushes crafted from nature.
The Imagination Gallery will feature robotics demonstrations led by educators from Oak Ridge Associated Universities.
In the gym, visitors can explore interactive stations with engineering challenges, magnetic slime experiments, and hands-on static electricity activities.
Creative make-and-take activities will include leaf rubbings, Paul Klee–inspired artwork, and pinwheels.
Families can also participate in collaborative experiences such as gravity painting, a pH-sensitive mural, art-bot drawings, and tessellation designs. The museum’s exhibits will be open during the event, offering additional opportunities for exploration and learning. A low sensory area will be provided by Xander’s Place.
Family STEAM Day is included with regular museum admission: $10 for adults, $9 for veterans, $8 for children ages 3-17, and $5 for seniors ages 62 and older, active-duty military, and educators with valid ID. Admission is free for children 2 and under, museum members, and Museums for All participants.
Family STEAM Day at the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge is supported by the Tennessee Arts Commission. The Tennessee STEAM Festival is a statewide celebration of science, technology, engineering, art and math, held Oct. 11–26. Visit tnsteam.org for information about the festival.
