The Friendship of Salem is back in dry dock at the historic Gloucester Marine Railways on Rocky Neck.
The 171-foot replica of a 1797 East Indiaman merchant ship was towed from Salem’s Derby Wharf to Gloucester around high tide Saturday.
On Monday morning, the railways pulled the ship out of the water into dry dock for the final stage of major repairs that began, according to the Salem Maritime National Historic Site, in the winter of 2022.
The remaining repairs, including critical structural repairs to the bow, will be completed during the next eight months in the Gloucester shipyard, known as the oldest continuously operating marine railways in the nation.
The project is being funded with entrance fee dollars at America’s National Parks under the Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act.
