Salem 50, Greater Lawrence 41: Quarterback Andreas Bernal equaled a school record by throwing for five touchdown passes and had 315 yards through the air as the Witches (now 2-1) put up 50 points for the second straight week. Captain Rocco Ryan scored three touchdowns; Mikey Curtin (100 yards receiving) caught two scoring tosses; and Oscar Fernandez (135 yards receiving) added an 88-yard TD grab.
Masconomet 31, Revere 6: Jack Fabiano continued his torrid start to the 2024 football season, rushing for three touchdowns and adding a 2-point conversion on each one as the Chieftains (3-0) went into Della Russo Stadium and came home with a non-league victory.
Fabiano scored from 11 yards out in the first quarter, crashed into the end zone from four yards out in the second, and barreled home on a 12-yard burst in the third quarter, giving the Chieftains a 24-0 lead. After each scoring run, he followed it up with a 2-point rush out of a Wildcat formation. Liam Ginley had Masconomet’s final touchdown in the fourth quarter, catching a 13-yard dart from quarterback Cruz Zizza before Devin O’Brien tacked on the extra point.
Swampscott 42, Peabody 14: Keylan Davis (76 yards) and Gabe Tripp (81) both returned kickoffs for touchdowns and running back Henry Buettler scored twice while rushing for 140 yards as the Big Blue (2-1) ended Peabody’s 27-game regular season winning streak dating back to 2021. Joe Marino also snared TD passes of 17 and 27 yards from quarterback John von Barta.
Peabody (2-1) got two scores from Dorlyn Morel, including one on a 40-yard fumble return, and another from QB Luke Maglione.
Marblehead 55, Shepherd Hill: Yael Garcia ran for touchdowns from 4 and 70 yards, out, respectively, giving the Magicians their first win of 2024. Captains Crew Monaco (46 yards) and Colt Wales (4 yards) also had TD runs, as did Bernardo Bannis (44 yards) and Oscar Galante (81 yards). Quarterback Finn Gallup threw scoring passes to Sam Thompson (6 yards) and Cam Quigley (11 yards).
Reading 28, Danvers 6: The Falcons (1-2) scored late in the first half on a 2-yard keeper by sophomore quarterback Nate Wise, making it a 14-6 ballgame, but the Rockers took the opening kick of the second half back for a touchdown, then punched another one in late on a 96-yard run.
Captain Owen Shanbar led Danvers with 75 yards on the ground, while Kaio Borghorst had 67. Wise completed nine passes for 92 yards, with six of those completions going to captain Mike Albano for 68 yards.
Watertown 22, Ipswich 14: The Tigers dropped a heartbreaker on the road when Watertown punched in the go-ahead touchdown with 19 seconds left to play. Vin Winter threw touchdown passes of 61 yards to Massimo Pinsky and 14 yards to Ryan Sexton for the Ipswich scores, while Johnny Stevens had an interception.
Captains Luke Wile and Will Gromko were both swarming on defense, the D-line was stout throughout the contest, and the secondary played well for most of the night, including pass breakups by Pinsky, Sexton, James Dick and Zach Isaac.
St. John’s Prep 31, Central Catholic 24: The Eagles raced out to a 17-point lead behind two TD runs from sophomore Jordan Toribio and eventually held off the host Raiders. Tight end Josh Haarmann (9 yards) and captain Merrick Barlow (40 yards) caught touchdown passes from freshman QB Chris Vargas (9-for-15, 147 yards),. Another ninth grader, Riley Selvais, making six catches for 74 yards. LJ Laws contributed a 32-yard field goal and four extra points for St. John’s Prep (now 3-0).
