GIRLS BASKETBALL
Danvers 38, Swampscott 27: Kayda Brown returned from injury and made four 3-pointers for 12 points to help the Falcons (2-4) get back into the win column. Angie Djoko also had a tremendous game with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Bishop Fenwick 74, Cardinal Spellman 16: Senior captain Cecilia Key had 23 points and five steals and the Crusaders cruised to 6-1. Sophomore Celia Neilson had a season-best 18 to go with nine steals and classmate Caitlin Boyle added seven with 10 assists. Senior Isabella Lopez-Martin and sophomore Anna Fertonani ran the floor well with four assists each.
Masconomet 54, Beverly 45: The Chieftains (3-3) rallied in the second half to win their third straight. Beverly (4-3) saw its four-game win streak snapped but got 15 points with five rebounds from Molly Potter. Lauren Caley added seven points with seven rebounds and freshman Jules Stevenson scored nine with five assists.
Molly Potter had 15pts and 5 boards. Lauren Caley had 7 and 7. Jules Stevenson had 9pts and 5 assists.
Lynnfield 34, Essex Tech 32: Nicole Mwaura scored 14 points and the Hawks (3-5) took a tough-luck loss on the final possession. Janelle Dalton also played well for Essex with seven points.
Hamilton-Wenham 49, Amesbury 22: Sadie Gamber scored 10 points and the Generals (6-2) played immense defense in limiting the Red Hawks to 12 second half points. Margot Bruce Morris added six in fourth quarter to help H-W pull away and Asa LaBell, a freshman, scored her first varsity points.
Montrose 52, Covenant Christian 10: Julia Ray had five points for the Cougars, who kept it close in the first half but were plagued by foul troubles in the second.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Beverly 70, Masconomet 59: Jacob Klass scored 20 points and the Panthers (3-5) made it back-to-back home conference wins to start off the new year. Senior guard Aidan Sullivan also had a nice night with 15 points.
Swampscott 67, Danvers 47: Liam Wales exploded for 20 points to lift the Big Blue to a solid road win. Connor Chiarello scored 18 and Nakeylan Davis chipped in with nine as Swampscott (4-2) exhibited excellent defensive pressure throughout to disrupt the Falcons (3-4).
Cardinal Spellman 62, Bishop Fenwick 46: Jimmy Vahey ripped down a dozen rebounds and scored nine points to highlight things for the Crusaders. James Meklis also scored nine.
Hamilton-Wenham 52, Amesbury 47: Chris Collins had a monster night on the glass with 21 rebounds in addition to scoring 13 points and the Generals evened their record at 3-3. A.B. Labell also scored 13 with 10 boards, seven assists and seven steals.
Lynnfield 65, Essex Tech 29: PJ Leontakianakos led the Hawks with 13 points including four triples while Thomas Obrien, Elijah Copeland and Emmett Marchant played well also.
BOYS HOCKEY
Pingree 5, Wilbraham & Monson 0: Goals by Kellen Danaher, Ryan Kavanaugh, Quinn Moses and Joe Gaffney carried the Highlanders to an impressive home win. Cam Anderson netted the game-winner in the first and also had two assists.
GIRLS HOCKEY
Holderness 3, Pingree 1: Ashley Smail netted a power play goal in her return from injury with assists from Aby Amigo and Morgan McLaughlin, but the Highlanders fell on the road. Freshman goalie Piper Davekos had an outstanding game with 42 saves.
SWIMMING
Peabody/Essex 94, Salem 78: Eight different first place finishes enabled the Tanners to prevail in the pool late Thursday night. Charlie Wise (200 IM, 2:37.49), Aidan Rosell (50 freestyle, 29.31), Maddy Murray (diving, 213:225 points), captain Susie Josephson (100 butterfly, 1:11.00), and fellow captain James Teague (100 breaststroke, 1:17.30) were individuals who all won their events. So did the girls 200 medley relay of Wise, Kelly Uribe, Nora Hunter and Mia Koulopoulos (2:05.58), qualifying for sectionals in the process; the 200 free relay of Cole Everitt, Melanie Bradley, Justin Nelson, and Rosell (2:03.09); and the boys 400 free relay of Ambrose Teague, Jake D’Eon, Dylan Wellington, and James Teague (4:11.28). Also, the girls 400 free relay team of Wise, Uribe, Hunter and Koulopoulos came in second place (4:14.67) and qualified for sectionals.
BOYS TRACK
Masconomet 68, Winthrop 18: Winners for the Chieftains included Colin Moran in the high hurdles, Nicco Cefalo in the 300 meters, Luke Mayneard in the 1000, Noah Demers in the mile, Cooper Ogden in the 2-mile, Nathan Molina in the high jump, and Kaden Mason in the shot put.
St. John’s Prep 63, Xaverian 33: The Eagles (5-0) locked down the indoor Catholic Conference title and got event wins from Lincoln Massaro (hurdles, 8.02), Nick MacDonald (600, 1:23.99), Dan Padley (1000, 2:39, and mile, 4:33), Mateo DeOrio (2-mile, 10:07), Tireni Asenuga (long jump 20-10), Geo Moretti (high jump, 6-3) and Gael Garcia (shot put, 43-even).
WOMEN’S COLLEGE HOCKEY
New England College 7, Salem State 2: Former Masconomet standout Mikayla Vincent had a goal for the Pilgrims and Salem State fell to 5-9 despite an early tally by Deanna Bosco. Emma Ramsey also scored for SSU and Kaia Hollingsworth made 33 saves.
