GIRLS BASKETBALL
Peabody 43, Salem 21: The Tanners (8-5) took another step towards the state tourney with a gritty road win led by Ava Ryan, Brielle Broughton, Sophia Galbiati, Taylor King and Tiffany Dang.
Before the game, Salem honored its greatest-ever player in program history, Evie Oquendo, by retiring her iconic No. 24 jersey. (More to come on this in Monday’s Salem News).
Danvers 52, Gloucester 38: The Falcons used another big second half to move to 11-1 and remain unbeaten in NEC play. Angie Djoko scored 23 points with nine rebounds to lead the way while Annabel Boyd added 12 and Sienna Lynch scored eight with eight assists in addition to playing lockdown defense. Kayda Brown chipped in five points and five rebounds and Lila Flynn was also immense in the defensive post.
Bishop Fenwick 71, Cardinal Spellman 18: Senior captain Celia Neilson did a little but of everything with 25 points, eight steals and six assists as the Crusaders improved to 10-2. Senior captain Caitlin Boyle scored 12 with seven rebounds while junior Abby Jenkins scored nine, freshman Maddie McMillan scored six and sophomore Jane Koulopoulos scored seven to go with five assists.
Ipswich 65, Notre Dame Christo Rey 38: Winning its seventh game out of its last nine contests, the Tigers (now 7-6) climbed over .500 for the first time this season with their non-league victory.
Amesbury 55, Hamilton-Wenham 44: The Generals (7-6) saw their four game win streak broken up despite a 22 point effort from Margot Bryce Morris. Gabriella Jewitt and Lilly Giovannucci scored eight and seven, respectively, and Olive Bevilacqua played a strong defensive game off the bench.
Swampscott 40, Masconomet 34: Eve Byrne made two big free throws down the stretch to ice the win for the NEC Lynch leading Big Blue (8-4) while captain Sam Ward canned a critical triple, stretching the lead to four. Cecilia Tripp had a team-high eight rebounds and 11 points while Anna Kanders scored a dozen with seven rebounds plus four assists.
Sami Lalikos led the Chieftains (7-5) with 12 points and Sabrina Cafarelli had seven, but the Big Blue held their foes to just nine total points after halftime.
Winthrop 58, Marblehead 53: The Magicians were felled on the road by their Northeastern Conference rivals, falling to 6-5 on the season.
Essex Tech 33, Triton 30: Junior Mia Martinez scored 10 points and senior Avery Barteaux converted with nine to help the Hawks earn an exciting, razor thin win on the road.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Salem 75, Peabody 56: The well-balanced Witches (10-1) had four players scored in double figures led by captains Elian Rodriguez and Nate Lane with 15 each. Cleto Deng scored 14 and Matt Kenney had 11 in the road win for Salem.
Junior Mark Mendonca had a game-high 20 plus five rebounds and four assists for Peabody (2-11) and Thad Broughton scored 11 with eight rebounds and five dimes. Jeremiah Agbonavbare chipped in 11 points and Stephen Loris (6) and Jack Smith (4) both played well.
Danvers 70, Gloucester 46: An excellent all-around teamwide effort on defense enabled the Falcons to claw their way back to .500 at 6-6. Luca Tirella had a double-double for the winners with 16 points and 10 rebounds to go along with two blocks. Fellow senior Kyle Sillars added 15 points, four rebounds and four assists to the Danvers cause, while Connor DiTomaso finished with 10 points, three rebounds and five assists.
Essex Tech 72, Triton 51: Senior captain Antonio Ceruolo had a career night with 28 points to lead the Hawks and Jovan Quiles scored 17 with James Hope chipping in 15 as well.
Marblehead 63, Winthrop 34: Ten players scored for the Magicians (8-3), who feasted on transition points and were paced by 13 from junior captain Finn Baron.
Pingree 73, Portsmouth Abbey 50: Jordan Maxson scored 38 with eight rebounds to drive the Highlanders in a road win. Sami Welsh also played great while scoring a baker’s dozen.
Masconomet 77, Swampscott 51: The Chieftains (9-1) stayed hot, winning on their home floor against a previously once-beaten Big Blue (10-2) squad by double digits.
Georgetown 74, Ipswich 44: The Tigers got within six late in the first half but faltered against the defending D4 state champs. Anderson Pillis scored 15 with 11 rebounds for Ipswich and Trevor Manning scored 12 including three from long distance.
Cardinal Spellman 74, Bishop Fenwick 60: Sophomore Damon Matargas paced the Crusaders with 21 points while teammate OG Pashoto, a junior big, also had a huge game with 19 points and 17 rebounds. Senior guard Jake Bellacini added 11 points for Fenwick (now 2-10) in its road setback.
Catholic Memorial 79, St. John’s Prep 74 (2OT): The Eagles (2-10) took the Knights to two extra sessions but couldn’t quite get the push required to score the upset win. In doing so, they dropped their seventh straight contest by just single digits.
BOYS TRACK
Peabody 55.5, Gloucester 30.5: Luke Dang and Iago Pacheco took first and second in the hurdles, Henry Sawyer won the 300, Matt McCusker took the mile and the 4×400 of Andrew Senfuma, Jackson Guerriero, Jon Ward and Dang was also victorious to power the Tanners. Other event winners were
Marblehead 68, Saugus 12: Winners for the Magicians were Clark Roszell (high jump), Owen Coyne (dash), Noah Jackson (hurdles), Victor Pechhold (600), Felix Regnault (1000), Quinn Rowland (mile) and Will Criukshank (2-mile).
GIRLS TRACK
Marblehead 65, Saugus 21: The Magicians got first place performances from Lillian Reddy (shot put), Lucy Flynn (dash), Charlotte Hodgkinson (300), Geneva Becker (600), Sophia Letwin (1000), Elisabeth Greely (mile) and Mari O’Connell (2-mile).
BOYS HOCKEY
Groton 7, Pingree 3: Sean Foster, Connor Leminen, and Drew Gallucci helped stake the Highlanders to an early 3-1 lead before the hosts scored the game’s final six goals to win going away. Captain Tynan Moses had two assists and fellow captain Danny Patch had one for Pingree (7-5-3), which saw its three-game winning streak snapped.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE HOCKEY
Endicott 3, Curry 1: Topsfield’s Maddie DiNardo broke a 1-1 tie at 4:09 of the third to send the No. 11 ranked Gulls (12-4-1) to victory on home ice. Abbey Agrondia added a goal and an assist, Julia Carrigan iced it with a shorthanded tally and goalie Casey Mortiz was excellent with 36 saves.
MEN’S COLLEGE HOCKEY
Endicott 1, Roger Williams 1: The nationally ranked Gulls (12-2-2) trailed until Louie Kamienski scored midway through the third but neither team could break the stalemate the rest of the way. Endicott settled for the draw despite a 60-25 edge in shots on goal.
Salem State 2, Framingham State 0: Former Beverly co-op star Halle Greenleaf scored the game-winner for Salem State and Winthrop product Talia Martucci also lit the lamp at Rockett Arena. Amy Thul stopped all 19 pucks to ensure the Vikings were the victors.
MEN’S COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL
Endicott 3, Emmanuel 2: The Gulls (1-0) dropped the first two sets but rallied to win the next two and took the tiebreaker by a 15-12 score. Aidan Iavocelli had 16 kills while Matt Tierney racked up 49 assists and Aaron Bennett (13) and Ethan Norris (10) were also in double digits for spikes.
