SOFTBALL
Marblehead 3, Leominster 0: Ashley Mortensen dropped a bunt to plate a run in the second, Tessa Andriano had an RBI single in the third and that was more than enough support for Tessa Francis, who struck out 11 in a 3-hit shutout to put the No. 15 seed Magicians (17-4) into the D2 Sweet 16. Isabel Mortensen had two of Marblehead’s seven total hits while Hailey Schmitt singled and scored, Nora Mahan had one hit and Lyla McGovern scored a run.
Bishop Fenwick 10, Falmouth 7: The Crusaders (7-12) led by as many as seven and had to hold in the late innings to advance with a Division 3 preliminary round home win. Tasha O’Brien went 3-for-4 with two RBI while Katie O’Brien tripled and Sophia Proto and Val Tate (2 runs) both supplied doubled. Lulu Dias also had two hits for Fenwick and Vivian Fortin went the distance in the circle.
BASEBALL
Marblehead 4, Marshfield 2: Senior righty Carter Sahagian spun a 2-hit gem, striking out six with a mere one walk to put the Magicians (11-10) into the D2 Round of 32 with a mild upset win on the road. Stef Shepard’s early 2-run knock set the tone for Marblehead while Ethan Harwood and Aidan Downey had RBI singles. E.J. Wyman, Colt Wales and Grey Leventhal added singles for the Magicians, who face Mansfield on the road on Sunday in the next round.
Winchester 6, Beverly 4: Callan McCay’s RBI single in the top of the seventh made it a two-run game and Beverly (12-8) got the tying run to the plate but couldn’t complete the comeback in Division 1 preliminary round action. McCay and Cam Connolly (two doubles) each had two hits for Beverly while captain Micah McManus totaled three RBI, including a solo homer, while fanning three in three shutout relief innings. Danny Pierce also singled and scored for Beverly.
Lincoln-Sudbury 7, Peabody 0: Senior captain Jariel Tolentino had the lone hit for the Tanners (14-7) on the road in the Division 1 preliminary round. The Warriors played superb defense (Peabody struck out only six times) and the Tanners made three errors that led to a pair of unearned runs as L-S scored three in the second and didn’t pull away until the bottom of the sixth. Senior Joey Sinibaldi threw 4 1/3 relief to try to keep L-S at bay and Max Silvia scattered four hits over 1 2/3.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Essex Tech 15, Greater Lowell 2: Morgan Costa finished with a game-high six goals and three assists as the Hawks () crushed the top seed on the road to capture the State Vocational School championship prior to starting the MIAA playoffs next week. Gabby Adie also had a big day for the winners with four goals and two assists; Janelle Dalton scored three times with one helper; Sydney Mace added two goals; and Chelsea Martinez had two assists. Goalkeeper Frankie Roper picked up another win, making four saves.
BOYS LACROSSE
St. John’s Prep 19, Medford 1: Joe Bullard and Thias Tolo each scored two goals as 17 different players found the scoresheet for the Eagles (18-1) in a Division 1 playoff first round triumph. Danny Cahill, Sam Kelly, and brothers Cam and Ryan McCarthy all had a goal and one assist for St. John’s Prep, who got single tallies from Jack Weissenburger, Charlie Angell, JP Sullivan, Kevin Correa, Chase Kenyon, Reid Formicola, Nolan Convey, Brady Scudder, Mac Crawford, Will Tappan and Owen White. Luke Kelly added two assists, Cal Haughey had an excellent defensive game, and goalies Mattheus DuPlessis (2 saves in one quarter), Sam Pruell (1 save in two quarters) and, in his varsity debut, Calvin Haughey (2 saves in one quarter) all shone. In addition, Chase Kenyon won 18-of-20 faceoffs.
GIRLS TENNIS
Boston Latin 3, Beverly 0: After winning in the preliminary round, the 33rd seeded Panthers (9-9) took on the No. 1 seeded Wolfpack and were playing well in both matches before the rains came, ending the match after hosts won all three singles bouts.
BOYS TENNIS
St. John’s Prep 5, Methuen 0: It was smooth sailing for the top ranked and unbeaten Eagles () in a Division 1 first round playoff sweep. Jack Prokopis (8-0), Luke Free (8-0) and Boris Kouzminov (7-1) all scored pro set victories for St. John’s Prep (now 18-0), with Ben Shore and Ean Haykal grabbing an 8-0 triumph at first doubles. The hosts also scored a win at second doubles by forfeit.
Falmouth Academy 5, Ipswich 0: The 21st seeded Tigers (5-12) saw their season come to a halt in the first round of the Division 4 state tournament despite strong play from Nathaniel Pittner, who battled for three sets at No. 1 singles, as well as Yianni Nikolau, who fell in a first set tiebreaker at second singles. The first doubles team of Cooper Bousum and Alex Wilt also performed well in a 7-5, 6-3 setback.
