BOYS BASKETBALL
Hamilton-Wenham 70, Rockport 61: Senior AB Labell scored 20 of his team-high 26 points in the second half while snaring a dozen rebounds and dishing out seven dimes to give the Generals a satisfying road victory. Down by 11 points at halftime, Hamilton-Wenham scored 20 points in the third quarter to slice their deficit to one point, then added 29 more points over the final eight minutes. Junior Caden Schrock also had a big game with 18 points and 11 rebounds for the winners, helping to offset a hot shooting night from Rockport captain Josiah Whitley (28 points, with 22 in the second half).
Beverly 74, Peabody 45: Corey Klass dropped in 26 points to help the host Panthers (7-5) end Peabody’s seven-game winning streak. Fellow junior Isaac Saas added 10 points for the winners, while freshmen Connie Panda (11 points) and Ben Doughty (9 points) both had big games as well.
The Tanners (7-4) were led by Mark Mendonca with 17 points with Thad Broughton scoring 14 and Justin Pais chipping in five.
Salem 88, Saugus 41: Sophomore Elian Rodriguez scored a game high 27 points and also made five steals to pace the Witches (6-1) to an easy victory. Nate Lane finished with a 12 points, nine assists, five rebounds and four steals for Salem, which also got eight points apiece from Canei McLeod and Josh Giaff Hodge plus six rebounds from Larell Carpenter. In all, 12 players had points for the Witch City kids.
Marblehead 68, Danvers 57: Down by one at the break, the Magicians (4-4) came out hard and heavy in the third quarter to take a 50-44 lead and never looked back. Senior captain Sam Thompson had a game-high 19 points; he was aided by 16 points from sophomore guard Finn Baron and 14 more from senior captain Matt Sherf.
Connor DiTomaso, a junior, scored 14 points thanks to hitting three of his four 3-point attempts for the Falcons (5-7). Senior captain Kevin Ahearn added nine points, seven rebounds and a half-dozen assists.
Georgetown 57, Ipswich 36: Vin Winter scored a career-best 17 points for Ipswich while James Norris posted his fifth straight double-double with 14 points and a dozen rebounds.
North Reading 59, Essex Tech 33: The Hawks fell to 3-7 with a road loss.
St. John’s Shrewsbury 59, St. John’s Prep 47: Marcus Magliore and Dewagner De Los Santos both scored 16 points for the Eagles (now 1-10) in a home defeat. Jack Murley and Michael Miller each buried a 3-pointer for the locals as well.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Bishop Fenwick 62, Cardinal Spellman 21: Kiley Bloom had a breakout outing with 11 points and six rebounds and the Crusaders improved to 7-3. Celia Neilson scored 16 points and handed out six assists while Caitlin Boyle scored 15 and grabbed six rebounds.
Peabody 66, Beverly 22: Senior Ally Bettencourt had a season-high of 17 points and also grabbed 15 rebounds as the Tanners had their best all-around performance of the season. Sophia Coburn scored 12 and had eight boards while Olivia Gaynor scored 10. Lizzy Bettencourt ripped down 10 rebounds and Maia Davis and Ava Ryan scored six each.
Beverly (2-7) was led by Infinity Burns (ten rebounds), Anna Fertonani (three points, four steals) and Jayden Starr (five points, three rebounds).
Marblehead 31, Danvers 30: Down 10 points at one point, the Falcons battled back and had a chance to win it late but couldn’t get their shots to fall. Angie Djoko had a dozen points for the Blue-and-White while Annabel Boyd and Kayda Brown each had six points.
Gloucester 45, Swampscott 43: The Big Blue (now 5-4) had a chance to tie or win it in the closing seconds but fell just short. Cecilia Tripp, a sophomore, had a team-best 17 points for Swampscott, with classmate Sam Ward adding 14 points thanks to a trio of 3-pointers. Freshman Anna Kanders added 12 points.
Hamilton-Wenham 53, Winthrop 39: Sasha Makogonov poured in a career high 21 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to help the Generals (8-3) finish off a perfect week. Maren Cassidy and Margo BryceMorris each finished with eight points for H-W, which led the entire way.
North Reading 51, Essex Tech 26: Thais Dos Santos had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds but the Hawks (3-7) faltered in the third quarter against an excellent Hornets club. Mia Martinez scores six for Essex.
Georgetown 49, Ipswich 11: The Tigers fell to 0-10 with the loss on their home court.
GYMNASTICS
Beverly 130.95, Winthrop 130.75: Winning the all-around with a score of 35.85, Panther sophomore took first place in all four disciplines: vault (9.2), bars (9.3), beam (8.5) and floor exercises (8.8) to help her squad win by a razor-thin margin. Lily Pelletier tied for second place on floor (8-1) for Beverly, while Olivia Durand tied for third on vault (8.8).
GIRLS HOCKEY
Peabody 8, Newburyport 0: Sophomore Ava Louanis and senior Chloe Gromko both scored twice in the first eight minutes of the game and the Tanners (7-1-1) never looked back. Captains Ava Buckley and Mia Lava and senior Daniella White also scored and freshman Grace Allen deposited an Eleni Spack rebound for her first career goal. Alyse Mutti posted her third shutout of the season between the pipes.
Thayer 7, Pingree 1: Neely Payne had the lone goal for the Highlanders (6-8) while Aby Amigo and Eliza Payne set it up with assists.
BOYS HOCKEY
Pingree 14, Wilbraham & Monson 0: The Highlanders had an easy time of it as the final score suggests, improving to 6-6-1.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE HOCKEY
Endicott 5, Curry 2: Samantha Fantasia broke a second period tie and the No. 15 ranked Gulls (12-4) controlled the latter stages after being tied with the visitors 2-2 after one. Rivers Morris and Teaghan Hall each had a goal with an assist for Endicott and Cammi Ahern potted one with freshman goalie Lauren Ferrari stopping 27 shots.
Southern Maine 4, Salem State 2: Mallory Albanese had a goal and an assist in the third period and Brooke Dineen also scored but the Vikings (4-12) were doubled up on the road. Delaney Cox made 27 stops in net.
MEN’S COLLEGE HOCKEY
Endicott 7, Wentworth 3: Primo Self had a goal and two assists while A.J. Martinelli scored his first varsity goal as the Gulls scored five straight goals to pull away for the win. Gloucester’s Jack Costanzo also scored for the winners, as did Andrew Kurapov, Jackson Sterrett, Cody Hoban and Domenic Garozzo.
