SOFTBALL
Masconomet 2, Marblehead 0: Back-to-back RBI singles by Sabrina Cafarelli and Angie Vecchio in the fifth plated the game’s only runs and the Chieftains (7-2) pulled into a first place tie atop the NEC Dunn. Freshman Amelia Palermo’s single started the rally and junior Sydnee Vocino pitched out of two bases loaded jams. Tessa Francis struck out 11 for Marblehead (7-4) and Tessa Andriano and Isabel Mortensen had the Magicians’ only hits.
Peabody 5, Danvers 2: Senior captain JJ Emerson hit a double, junior captain Kaylee DiNicola was 2-for-3 with two RBI and leadoff hitter Taylor King went 3-for-4 to help the Tanners (5-2) score four in the fifth to get by Danvers. Olivia Palmeiri pitched great in working around five hits and striking out five batters while Meghan Foley doubled, Mikayla Creamer drove home a run and Lizzy Bettencourt added a hit.
Freshman Maddi Fuller struck out nine for Danvers while catcher Briley Keezer went 3-for-4 and threw out a base-stealer.
Salem 9, Winthrop 6: Julia Gauthier’s 3-run blast in the bottom of the seventh provided an exciting walk-off win for the Witches. Gauthier finished the game 2-for-3 with five RBI while pitcher Annie Thornett struck out 10 and helped herself with three hits and three runs. Shaylee Paige added two hits and scored twice for Salem and Emma Brennan knocked in two runs.
Pingree 8, Winsor 7: Molly Degnan blasted two home runs, had four RBI and was also the winning pitcher for the Highlanders. Antonella Najim chipped in with two hits and a double, Charlotte Loughman went 3-for-4 and doubled and Izzy Achterhof provided an RBI double.
Essex Tech 18, Shawsheen Tech 6: Adriana Lassus went 4-for-4 including a 2-run homer and Sophia Barreira pitched well for the Hawks to collect the win.
BASEBALL
Marblehead 11, Masconomet 9: In the first round of the Spartan Invitational, the Chieftains scored seven times in the bottom of the seventh but the Magicians finally put out the fire thanks to lefty Yanzel Fuentes to advance to Saturday’s title game. Greyson Leventhal went 4-for-4 on the day, Owen Coyne had two hits and Will DePhillips knocked in two runs for Marblehead (5-3).
For the Chieftains (5-4), Drew Gustafson collected two RBI while Cal Weidman and Liam Ginley had two hits each. Henry Hoover also pitched well in a relief appearance and Aidan Brown knocked home three runs.
Hamilton-Wenham 8, Bishop Fenwick 3: To avoid their first loss, the Generals (8-0) scored six in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run single by Chase Cann giving H-W the lead for good. Cormac Heney struck out seven in six innings while collecting two RBI, Griffin Hawkins also had two RBI and Ollie Blatz held Fenwick off in the seventh.
Henry VanFaasen pitched tremendously for the Crusaders (5-3), who got doubles by Andrew Kiricoples (2-for-4) and Nick McFadden (2 RBI) to grab a 3-2 lead through five.
Swampscott 7, Saugus 0: Senior righty Jami Ford struck out eight in a 2-hitter and the Big Blue moved to 5-3. Caden Ross (2 runs), Luc Tardiff and Michael Collins all hit doubles and Chase Groothuis went 2-for-4 with three runs scores plus an RBI.
Winthrop 10, Salem 2: Jeremiah Barahona hit a solo homer for the Witches (0-8), but the Vikes scored five in the bottom of the sixth to pull away. Xavier Pacheco also knocked home a run for Salem and Yuriel Gonzalez Vargas struck out eight in five innings while allowing just one earned run.
Revere 5, Peabody 4: The Tanners (4-5) left the tying run in scoring position in the sixth and fell despite out hitting the Patriots 6-3. Jack Smith gave Peabody 2 2/3 strong relief innings while senior captain Jake Crocker had two hits, stole two bases and had an RBI. Liam Smith and senior captain Ethan Waybret also singled and posted RBI.
Pingree 14, Nobles 13: The Highlanders trailed by 10 in the fifth but came all the way back with Ty Bovaird’s two out game-winning RBI single coming after first year Brody Nicholson’s knock tied things up. Teddy Perkins grabbed the win with five outs of scoreless relief work.
BOYS LACROSSE
Danvers 19, Peabody 5: Evan Kaciqi scored his first career goal and added his first two varsity assists while Gabe Sokal also had his first varsity point with an assist as the Falcons (5-4) rolled. Mason Gadbois (4 goals, 5 assists), Ben Campbell (4 goals, 2 assists), Cooper Dunham (3 goals, 3 assists), Tyler Moody (3 goals, 2 assists) and Logan Jacques (3 goals) all put up crooked numbers for Danvers (5-4), with Evan Roach adding a goal and an assist pus 22 faceoff wins. Connor Dembowski stopped 11 shots while backup goalie Reardon Zaccaria stopped four of five shots.
Freshman Logan Bryte scored twice for Peabody (1-8) while Spencer Turcotte had one goal and one assist. Single goals came from Matt Vaz and Chris Brown, with goalie Ben Wager stopping eight shots.
Tewksbury 17, Essex Tech 5: Chase Ruberti scored twice in a road loss for the Hawks (0-8), with Jack Hanchett adding a goal and one assist. Casey Collins and Quinn Macri each added one goal, Colby Collins assisted on one tally, and goalies Connor Lacey (7 saves) and Quinn Woodson (2 saves).
Gloucester 13, Salem 6: Jake Lister scored four times for the Witches while AJ Alessi and Tyler Lister netted two each. Single assists came from Matt Rosa and Fionn Coughlin. Netminder Vincent Milano finished with a dozen saves for Salem (3-7).
St. Paul’s 15, Pingree 8: The Highlanders (now 4-3) let a 6-2 lead slip away despite two goals and two assists from senior Nick Donovan and 13 saves from goalie Marcello Amadeo. Finley McClintock won 17-of-27 faceoffs for Pingree, whose other offense came from Henry Card (2 goals, assist), Jake Hiltz (2 goals), Matt Tersolo and Connor O’Neil (1 goal eachc) and Colin Driscoll (assist).
Masconomet 7, Beverly 3: Ben Miga’s hat trick and some standout defense helped the Chieftains (now 3-6) hold down the Panthers. Jax Parker and Myles Bernier added a goal and an assist each and Jack Wheadon had a great game in net with 10 stops. Other goals came from Tyler Durgan and Owen Hannigan, and Timmy McManus dished out two assists.
Beverly (now 4-3) got goals from Nate Skuse, Ridley Acheson and George Frost, with Will Burgess picking up one assist and goalie Graham Ferretti making 12 saves.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Beverly 13, Masconomet 3: Sasha Miller scored her 100th career goal, netting six total plus two assists, and the first-place Panthers (8-1) handled the Chieftains for their eighth straight win. Madeline LeBlanc added a hat trick while Marissa Hutton had a goal and three helpers, Meghan Potter, Cameron Koloski and Ashley Wallace had a goal each and Charlotte Miller was outstanding on defense.
Freshman Kayleigh LeColst led Masco with a goal and two assists and Sophia Carson scooped up nine ground balls.
Peabody 16, Danvers 0: It was a balanced effort for the Tanners (6-3) with Victoria Vaz (two assists, five ground balls) and Brianna Symonds (assist) each scoring twice. Arianna Alvarado won six draws and scored while Sophia Kassis, Bella Kassis, Sydney Angland, Leah Bresnahan (four assists), Elizabeth Moore and Sydney Costanzo all scored once. Sophia Galbiati and Lea Ruffing netted two each and senior Eleni Spack made two saves.
Elizabeth Solis had 12 saves in net for the Falcons.
Gloucester 8, Salem 7: Junior goalie Toby Salsgiver made a season-best 17 saves but the Witches fell in the final minutes in a back-and-forth battle. Junior Avely Ricciarelli had the first two goals of her career and sophomore Madyson Eichel also netted her first on the varsity. Emily Mercier, Lily Navins and Makenzie Eichel also scored for Salem.
GIRLS TRACK
Chieftains shine: At the MSTCA Invitational, Sami Lalikos was third in the shot put as well as fourth in the discus while Mara Siewko won the pentathlon by breaking her own school record with 3,391 points. On the track, Ada Paglierani finished 4th in the 400H.
In the late afternoon, the Masco distance team competed in the BSR Eagle Classic. Senior captain Savannah Stevens finished second in the 800 followed closely by teammate Abigail Williams, who medaled in 5th place.
COLLEGE SOFTBALL
Gordon drops two: The Scots (10-23) lost to Wentworth 6-0 and 8-1. Caoimhe Wernsing had a 3-for-4 showing in one of the bouts.
COLLEGE BASEBALL
Salem State 6, Framingham State 2: Matt Walling threw a nine inning complete game victory for the Vikings (14-14), who had five extra base hits. Nolan Currier hit a triple to lead the attack while Antonio Belgrove, Owen Duggan, Aidan Lynch and Ethan Stepputtis all doubled and Salem native Jack Doyle went 2-for-4.
MEN’S COLLEGE LACROSSE
UMass Boston 9, Salem State 6: Ryan Cohen made 16 saves for the Vikings (8-8) and James Tatro was the high scorer with three tallies.
