SOFTBALL
Marblehead 7, Peabody 4: Tessa Francis escaped a bases loaded jam in the sixth, retired the side in the seventh and finished with 11 strikeouts while working around nine hits and six walks in a hard-fought win. Francis and Tessa Andriano (2-for-3, 4 RBI) both homered and Hailey Schmitt also had two hits and scored twice for unbeaten Marblehead (4-0).
Freshman Liv Guarino’s two-run single in the fourth got the Tanners (2-2) back in the game while captain Jess Steed and Jazzy Iraolo both went 2-for-4. Taylor King and Kaylee DiNicola also had hits and came around to score.
Beverly 8, Masconomet 6: Jasmine Feliciano had two hits and three RBI and Athena McKenna and Meredith Johnston drove homes run as Beverly (2-0) built an 8-1 lead before the Chieftains (1-5) came roaring back. Gabbi Wickeri went the distance for Beverly and stranded double-digit runners on base while Lidia Mieda went 2-for-3 and scored twice. Keira McNutt and Avery LeBlacn also earned their first varsity hits for the Orange-and-Black.
Aimee Quimby had a 2-run double and Ally Kelter finished with three hits as Masconomet scored five in the sixth but couldn’t get any closer than two runs. Delilah Kastos and Emma MacCormack also had RBI and freshman catcher Logan Schapp went 2-for-4.
Swampscott 8, Winthrop 0: Mia Tringale earned the win with a 2-hit shutout and six strikeouts. Swampscott (2-2) had ten total hits led by Cece O’Connor (2-for-3, 3 RBI), Lauryn Fahey (2 hits) and Olivia Barletta (2 hits).
Manchester Essex 17, Ipswich 6: Ava Poire had three hits and stole two bases for the Tigers while Elizabeth Marsella and Elin Roberts each drove in two runs. Colleen Macdonald also got on base twice via walks. Liz Marsella went the distance on the mound, striking out four.
Hamilton-Wenham 22, Rockport 4: Violet Fazio blasted a home run in the top of the first inning to get the Generals off and running in a blowout win. Molly Bransfield, Sydney Smith and Bianca Fredrickson each had two-run base knocks and Maren McCaughey launched her own solo home run in the fourth inning. Ava Day, Annie Soleimani and Fredrickson all finished with three RBI in the victory, with Bransfield scattering three hits and striking out six over five innings to earn the decision on the hill.
BASEBALL
Beverly 5, Masconomet 4: Charlie Salerno’s RBI single scored Callan McCay (single) to break a 4-4 tie in the top of the seventh and Jon Reyes threw his second scoreless relief inning for the save as the Panthers (2-1) shaded the Chieftains (1-2) in Boxford. Colby McLane and McCoy each had two hits and Connor Connolly drove in a run for Beverly, which used six pitchers to keep the hosts off balance.
Cruz Zizza pitched well for Masco, striking out eight over five innings, Cal Weidman had two hits and two RBI and Davis DeLuties went 2-for-4.
Peabody 11, Salem 4: Senior captain Jariel Tolentino went 4-for-5 with two runs, two RBI and two steals as the Tanners (2-1) scored five in the first to jump on the Witches. Joey Sinibaldi earned his first career win with five strong innings while Jacob Crocker, Jayden Cunningham (two doubles, RBI), Ethan Waybret and Luke Maglione all had multi-hit days for Peabody.
Kevin Soto (4 total RBI) sparked Salem (1-3) with a 3-run homer that made it 8-4 in the sixth and Jack Tsoutsouras also had a pair of hits.
Swampscott 10, Winthrop 2: Nate Lee (2-for-4, 4 RBI), Michael Collins (2-for-3, 2 RBI), Nat Mahler (2 RBI) and Jami Ford (2-for-4) helped the Big Blue (3-2) pile up six in the top of the seventh to put away the Vikings. David Palmer threw four solid to pick up his second win while Ford was strong in relief and Chase Groothuis finished the job.
Westford Academy 6, Bishop Fenwick 5: The Crusaders (0-3) chipped away with two in the fifth and two in the sixth but couldn’t come all the day back despite a nice day from Anthony Herbert (three RBI). Haney Van Fassen scored twice and stole a bag with Timmy Ronningen, Matty Martisauskas and Ty Santos hitting safely.
UNIFIED SPORTS
Salem shines in season opener: Andy Nguyen, a senior, set a personal record in the shot put at 26 feet 5 inches while juniors Erik Shejaj (13-7) and Anson Froeschl (12-5) also set personal records in the long jump as the Salem unified track and field team opened its season with a great showing in Marblehead. Junior Kriss Grace (45-2 feet) and sophomore Elijah Sneed (37-9 feet) also PR’d in javelin, and freshman Joe Blackburn-Peters ran the 100 in an impressive 13.72 seconds.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Swampscott 15, Marblehead 10: Avery Laundry scored five times and Lilah Caplan made 10 saves to help the unbeaten Big Blue (5-0) hold off their rivals via an 8-3 second half run. Cecelia Tripp added four goals and Chloe Puzzo and Victoria Pierro both had three goals with two assists.
The Magicians (2-4) were led by Maddie Forbes and Kathryn Commoss with three goals plus one assists each. Ramona Gillett also scored three, Zoe Dwyer assisted three and Molly Bullard was strong in net with 11 saves.
Beverly 17, Winthrop 3: Sasha Miller netted five goals and assisted on another as the powerful Panthers cruised. Madeline LeBlanc added a hat trick with two assists and Lindsay Kaszynski, Annabelle Miller and Gwen Jones all scored twice. Ashley Wallace, Elliot Lund and Joselyn Silva added markers and Maddy Reynolds (five saves) and Meghan McCormack shared the win in net.
Danvers 13, Gloucester 5: Olivia Henry won 10 draw controls while scoring five times with an assist to power the Falcons. Annabel Boyd shined in net while Savannah Botthof and Addison Moore both scored three times. Sienna Goldberg added a goal and three assists and Giovanna Rodriguez also scored.
Peabody 13, Salem 0: Senior captain Caitlin Snow recorded her second shutout in three starts this season for the Tanners (2-1) while Brooke Lomasney (four goals, two assists) powered the offense. Ally Bettencourt also scored while Eleni Spack and Sophia Galbiati both scored their first varsity goals.
Bishop Fenwick 17, Georgetown 4: Kiley Bloom erupted for four goals and five assists and Hannah Bettencourt added another five goals as the Crusaders (6-1) won their fifth straight. Eve Eastman stopped four shots in the Fenwick net while getting offensive help from Neive Bachman (goal, 3 assists), Molly Sullivan (2 goals), and one tally each from Caroline Lapalme, Camille Yanofsky, Frankie Herbert, and Cori McMeniman.
BOYS LACROSSE
Peabody 9, Salem 3: Senior captain Aidan Haight stopped a dozen shots while fellow captain Jaden Kritikos, a senior midfielder, scored four goals to propel the Tanners (now 2-1). Mason Clickstein, Joe Vaz and captain Derek Collins each added a goal and one assist for Peabody with Nathan Carne and Matt Vaz also scoring. Two assists apiece came out of the sticks of Tyson Higgins and Steven Brown, with LSM Anthony Costanzo, another captain, grabbing seven ground balls.
Sophomore goalie Vincent Milano had a big day for Salem (2-2), stopping 18 shots. Andreas Bernal had a goal and an assist offensively, with Mikey Curtin and Jake Lister also scoring and A.J. Alessi handing out one helper.
Swampscott 8, Marblehead 7 (OT): Liam Keaney scored four goals, including the 100th of his career, and fellow captain Timmy Sheehan stopped 18 shots as the Big Blue downed their arch rivals for the second straight season — and for the first time on Marblehead’s turf. Chase Russo added a pair of goals while Emerson Joy and Joe Marino each had one for Swampscott (2-3), which got four takeaways each from Jay Domelowicz and Jack Duffy.
Unforced errors hurt the Magicians (now 1-2), who rallied to tie it late before mistakes cost them in OT.
Reece Moore (2 goals, 1 assist), Tyler Forbes (2 goals), Will Sullivan (goal, 4 assists), James Achterof (goal, 1 assist) and Bernardo Bannis (goal) scored for Marblehead, while Colin Maniaci had 19 saves between the pipes.
Danvers 16, Gloucester 2: Brady Tersolo netted four goals and teammates Tyler Moody and Connor Harvey each added three goals and two assists as the Falcons improved to 2-2. Cooper Dunham (2 goals, 3 assists) had another big game for the winners, who also received two tallies from Landon Mata plus a goal and an assist each from Hunter DeDominics and Tommy Cyr. Owen Swanton added an assist to the proceedings, and goaltender Aidan Perry came up with 10 saves.
Winthrop 10, Beverly 9 (OT): The Panthers (0-4) took the lead with 50 seconds left before Winthrop came back to tie it late and win it in overtime. Talan Rafter and Will Burgess both had three goals and two assists for Beverly, with Connor Wallace adding a goal and two assists and Ridley Acheson and Jonny Mezza adding solo tallies. Goalie Lucas Carbone finished with a season high 14 saves.
BOYS TENNIS
Masconomet 4, Hamilton-Wenham 1: Two singles wins and another two in doubles gave the Chieftains a season opening victory. Arjun Schreyaker (6-2, 6-0) and Parker Kurz (6-3, 7-5) claimed victory at second and third singles, respectively, as did Justin Saginor and Alex Raymond at first doubles (6-2, 2-6, 6-2) as well as Alex O’Brien and Akash Menon at second dubs (4-6, 6-2, 7-6).
Manchester Essex 3, Marblehead 2: Playing on their newly refurbished high school courts, the Magicians got both wins at doubles as Anthony Vizy and Ty Cooper took a 6-4, 6-1 triumph at first doubles, and Austin Bacon and TJ Kelly breezed to a 6-2, 6-1 decision.
GIRLS TENNIS
Hamilton-Wenham 3, Danvers 2: Gabriella Jewitt and Sadie Gamber won a third set tiebreaker, 10-4, to seal the second dramatic win in as many days for H-W. The Generals swept doubled behind Sofie Greene and Evelyn Esdale (6-4, 6-7, 6-4) and Naomi Provost won, 6-2, 6-2 at first singles.
Swampscott 5, Gloucester 0: The Big Blue dropped just three games to win this Northeastern Conference battle handily. Nikki Carr at first singles and May Hood/Eve Byrne at second doubles each won by 6-0, 6-0 scores; Ana Eccles at second singles, Lilly Carr at third singles, and Ava and Alexis O’Donnell prevailed by an identical 6-1, 6-0 margin.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Essex Tech 3, Collegiate Charter of Lowell 0: Dylan Krueger ended the evening with 11 kills and teammate Jack Booth added nine to spark the Hawks.
OUTDOOR TRACK
Salem falls to Saugus: The Witches boys’ team got first place finishes from Guywinz Jules (800), Kendal Morga (400) Krenar Gilaj (mile) and Brooks Workman (2-mile) in a tight 58-50 setback. Both the 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams also claimed first place, and Oscar Fernandez was second in the 400. Jayden Peterson added a second in the 400 and third in the high jump.
The Salem girls got first place finishes from Ella Joy (400) and Dever Cornell (800), a second from Kiany Troncoso (100), and thirds from Ella Jay (shot put) and Madyson Eichel (200).
MEN’S COLLEGE TENNIS
Endicott 7, Curry 0: The Gulls blanked the Colonels with singles wins by Eric Scalici (6-1, 6-2), Spencer Smith (6-0, 6-0), Brenna Drolet (6-0, 6-1), James Zeolie (6-0, 6-0), Greg Noroian and Brian Ward.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE TENNIS
Brandeis 7, Endicott 0: The Gulls dropped to 7-9 on the season with a road loss.
COLLEGE BASEBALL
Gulls cruise: Endicott ran its win streak to 13 by handling Curry, 8-0 and 8-1 to improve to 21-3. Charlie Hale tossed a 4-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts while Hamilton native Will Frain and Cade Bernardo both hit home runs in Game 1. Bernardo drove in two more in the nightcap, Evan Scully recorded a complete game with eight punchouts and Joey Frammartino had three hits.
Gordon drops two: Evan Clark homered to give Gordon (14-13) the lead over Western New England but the Golden Bears scored late to win, 2-1, and also battered the Scots 15-1 to take both ends of a CNE doubleheader.
COLLEGE SOFTBALL
Gordon swept: The Fighting Scots (7-19) were taken down by Suffolk, 3-1 and 12-2 in a league double dip. Samantha Perkins and three hits between the games with a solo homer while for Suffolk, Marblehead native Jolie Quintana started both games and delivered an RBI.
MEN’S COLLEGE LACROSSE
Keene State 20, Salem State 10: Beverly’s Grady Smith (4 goals, assist) and former Essex Tech standout Fisher Gadbois (3 goals, assist) both had big nights offensively for Salem State, but the visiting Owls turned on the offensive afterburners in the second half to pull away. Cam Smith (2) and Cam Collins also scored for the Vikings (now 7-5).
