BASEBALL
Danvers 5, Winthrop 0: The Falcons (4-2) posted their third straight shutout. This time, it was Cooper MacDonald working six innings and striking out six to earn his first career win with Dylan Weeks coming on for one inning of shut out work. Jason Walters drove home four runs and Jack Curcuru scored three of those while Chase Richmond also doubled.
Gloucester 1, Peabody 0: Senior captain Jacob Crocker had the only hit of the game for the Tanners (2-4), who saw unbeaten Gloucester score in the first and couldn’t respond. Senior righty Max Silva went the distance, scattering just five hits on the tough side of an NEC pitcher’s duel.
SOFTBALL
Danvers 6, Essex Tech 5: Senior Lila Flynn blasted a two-run homer while juniors Brooke Wilichoski (2-for-3, game-tying RBI) and Taylor Landry (game-winning hit) enabled the Falcons to take down the Hawks at home. Freshman pitcher Maddie Fuller came in relief in the fourth inning to pick up the victory, allowing just two hits while striking out four in 3 2/3 innings. She also went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Marblehead 7, Medford 0: Tessa Francis twirled a two-hitter with 12 strikeouts to pace the Magicians to their sixth triumph in seven games. Left fielder Nora Mahan and center fielder Ashley Mortensen led the offense with three hits each. Hailey Schmitt and Isabel Mortensen also hit safely.
Hamilton-Wenham 10, Saugus 5: Sydney Smith knocked three base hits and four RBI to help the Generals double up the Sachems. Lydia Reulet earned the win on the mound, striking out 11 and added three hits offensively, including an RBI single. Bianca Frederickson knocked in two during a five-run second inning. Lilly Guittarr and Lilly Kokos each stole multiple bases for Hamilton-Wenham as well.
Winthrop 11, Ipswich 5: A non-league home loss dropped the Tigers to 1-5 on the season.
BOYS LACROSSE
Hamilton-Wenham 11, Swampscott 5: Junior defenseman Andrew Powers and sophomore defender Mason Kraft both had spectacular games, as did junior long stick middie Kyle Russo and short stick defensive middie Devin Ireland, as the Generals (6-1) went into vacation week with their fifth straight victory. Goalie Joe Hughes, a senior, stopped 10 shots for the win. Billy Brown (3 goals, 3 assists), Reid Faldi (3 goals, assist), eighth grader Aiden LaSelva (2 goals, assist), Andrew Wilbur (goal), Will Seigal (goal) and Russo (goal) factored into the scoring.
Ollie Braham and Jason Rothwell both came up with two goals and one assist for the Big Blue, who also got one tally from John von Barta. Goalkeeper Colton Alex made 11 saves, and FOGO Luke Michigan was successful on 11-of-16 draws.
St. Mary’s Lynn 15, Bishop Fenwick 7: Logan Connolly and Dylan Patturelli both scored two goals and added one assist while Liam Kelsch turned aside 11 shots in net for Fenwick (now 4-5). Fred Pfischner, John Tavernese and CJ Masone added single goals, Mikey Paolini dished out two assists and Masone one.
Melrose 11, Masconomet 4: The Chieftains (now 1-5) got goals from Ben Miga, Jack Fabiano, Niko Emmanuel and Tyler Durgan, plus an assist from Timmy McManus. Goalkeeper Michael Kenny finished with five saves.
Wakefield 15, Danvers 3: Cooper Dunham, Mason Gadbois and Hunter DeDominicis all scored single goals for the Falcons (now 3-4), with Connor Dembowski turning aside five shots in net. Faceoff men Evan Roach (12-for-17) and Gio Castello (4-for-5) had strong days in the circle.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Beverly 14, Melrose 7: Sasha Miller was terrific in finishing with five goals, four assists and six draw controls to help the Panthers improve to 5-1. Goaltender Madeline Reynolds had a dozen saves while Nola Redman and Morgan Linskey excelled defensively for the Orange-and-Black. Also scoring goals were Madeline LeBlanc (4), Ashley Wallace (2), Marissa Hutton, Annabelle Miller and Cameron Koloski.
Ipswich 14, Manchester Essex 5: Allie Wile scorched the opposing net six times while goalies Sydney Leonard (5 saves) and Vivian Bodycombe (4 saves) both shined as the Tigers clawed their way to 6-2 on the season. Ella McCarthy added three goals and three assists; Keira McPartlin also had three goals; Natalie Elder picked up a goal and one assist; and Ella Schofield had one goal.
Pingree 16, New Hampton 4: Ellie Bracken scored four goals, including the 100th of her career, while Caitlin Cunningham had five goals with two helpers and four draw controls in the Highlanders’ win. Murphy Holden had a 78 save percentage between the pipes to pick up the victory. Isla Cleveland (2 goals, 2 assists, 5 caused turnovers), Shreve Loyd (goal, 3 assists, 4 ground balls) and Emily Collins (goal, assist, 3 GBs) also factored into the scoring as as Pingree finished with 10 assists and 22 ground balls.
Georgetown 14, Danvers 8: Addie Moore led the Falcons’ offense by scoring three times, while Sienna Goldberg added two strikes of her own. Dee Figueiredo (assist), Liv Henry and Sophia Goudreau also had single tallies for Danvers (now 1-6), while Ruth Gasinowski and Maddie Darisse picked up one assist each. Elizabeth Solis made five stops in net.
BOYS TENNIS
Pingree 3, Beaver Country Day 2: Victories from Luke LeBlond at first singles, Jack Mulrooney at second singles and Jamie Moore at third singles paved the way for the Highlanders to prevail.
RUGBY
St. John’s Prep 26, Belmont 22: Picking up their second victory in as many games this spring, the Eagles prevailed in a close battle on their home turf.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Greater Lowell 3, St. John’s Prep 1: The Eagles dropped to 1-7 this season after a four-set road defeat.
COLLEGE BASEBALL
Anna Maria 2, Salem State 1: The hosts scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning, sending the Vikings (10-13 overall, 6-7 MASCAC) back to Salem heartbroken. Ryan Bourgeois knocked in the lone run for SSU with a fourth inning single, scoring Owen Duggan. Despite pitching eight strong innings of six-hit baseball, Matt Walling was saddled with the loss.
MEN’S COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL
Cal Lutheran 3, Endicott 2: In the second round of the NCAA Division 3 tournament, the 19th ranked Gulls battled the nation’s No. 5 team tooth and nail before dropping a 14-25, 25-19, 30-28, 15-25, 13-15 contest at Stevens Institute of Technology. Senior Aidan Iacovelli had a match-high 24 kills to go with six digs and a block assist for Endicott (which finished 23-4). Jake Laborde added 19 kills, six digs, three block assists and a pair of service aces, while Aaron Bennett had 11 kills. The top assist men for the Blue-and-Green were Matty Tiernan (41) and Ethan Norris (25).
