SOFTBALL
Masconomet 1, Marblehead 0 (8 innings): Sabrina Cafarelli led off the bottom of the eighth with a double and came around to score the winning run on Aimee Quimby’s fielder’s choice as the Chieftains stunned the previously unbeaten Magicians (7-1). Sophomore Sydnee Vocino spun her third straight shutout, limiting Marblehead to three hits over all eight innings with 12 strikeouts.
Tessa Francis was again fabulous in defeat for the Magicians, striking out 15 over the complete game and scattering six hits. Cafarelli was the only player in the game with multiple hits and Tessa Andriano doubled for Marblehead.
Danvers 9, Peabody 7: Captain Addi McCarty blasted a pair of home runs and knocked in five runs while sophomore slugger Kyla Moroney had a double and a home run to send the Falcons (5-4) to victory. Skylar Coakley bore down in the bottom of the seventh and held off the Tanners to finish off a complete game with the tying run at the plate. Lila Flynn and Taylor Landry also had hits and Coakley fanned four while scattering nine hits.
Jazzy Iraola had a 2-run single to get Peabody (4-6) within striking distance after trailing by as many as six. Lizzy Bettencourt belted her 20th career home run to tie things at 3-3 in the third. J.J. Emerson, Kaylee Dinicola and Iraola had two hits each for the Tanners.
Beverly 16, Essex Tech 7: Senior captain Jasmine Feliciano had six RBI while going 3-for-4 and the Panthers (6-2) won a slugfest on the road. Athena McKenna had a 3-for-4 day with three RBI, Sophia Balducci homered and scored four times and Lidia Miedema came on to quell the Hawks by allowing one earned and striking out eight over the final six innings.
Junior captain Gigi Barrows went 2-for-4 with two RBI for Essex Tech, which led 6-4 after two but saw Beverly scored 12 unanswered over the next four frames.
Pingree 17, Winsor 4: Molly Degnan was 4-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI while also earning the victory on the hill, scattering four hits and striking out three to give the Highlanders their first win of 2025. Antonella Najim was 3-for-4 with two RBI while teammate Charlotte Loughman finished 3-for-5 with a double and three runs batted in.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Peabody 16, Danvers 0: Brooke Lomasney had eight points (5 goals, 3 assists) and Madi Barrett notched seven (3 goals, 4 assists) as the Tanners (5-2) blanked the Falcons for the second time this season. Other point-getters were Ally Bettencourt (hat trick), Ari Alvarado (goal, assist) with single goals netted by Bella Kassis, Victoria Vaz, Leah Bresnahan and Briana Symonds.
Annabel Boyd played well in net for Danvers with seven saves and Addi Moore and DeAnna Figueiredo both scooped up four ground balls.
Marblehead 10, Masconomet 7: Molly Bullard made ten saves and the Magicians (5-4) held the off the Chieftains after leading 5-4 at halftime. Five attackers all notched three points in a balanced effort: Maddie Forbes (goal, 2 assists), Ramona Gillett (2 goals, assist), Kathryn Commoss (2 goals, assist), Gretchen Smith (goal, 2 assists) and Zoe Dwyer (3 goals).
Methuen 8, Swampscott 7: The Big Blue fell to 7-2 with a non-league loss as Victoria Pierro and Chloe Puzzo both scored two goals. Avery Laundry added a goal and two assists while Bridget Maloney and Cecelia Tripp scored. Lilah Caplan was strong in net with eight stops.
Pingree 15, Rivers 6: Ellie Bracken found the twine six times and Caitlin Cunningham added four scores to power the Highlanders (now 6-1) to a decisive win. Liv Melei was the main facilitator with seven assists, while Waters Lloyd led Pingree in both draw controls (6) and ground balls (5).
BASEBALL
Swampscott 2, Saugus 1: Lefthander and captain Will Brogna threw a complete game and fanned five to lift the Big Blue (6-4), who sealed the win with a line drive double play in the seventh. Cooper Correnti’s bases loaded walk played the tiebreaking run in the sixth and Caden Ross had an RBI single to plate Adam Sparacio (2-out single) in the fifth.
Masconomet 2, Marblehead 0: Cruz Zizza tossed a 2-hit shutout and fanned five to send Masco (3-4) to the finals of the Spartan Classic, where they’ll meet host St. Mary’s. The Chieftains got single runs in the third and fifth with RBI by Zizza and Davis Letuties and a hit and run by Chase Lepore.
Marblehead (5-4), which faces Pope Francis in the consolation, was limited to singles by Aidan Downey and Ethan Harwood. Carter Sahagian pitched excellent in the duel with seven strikeouts and two hits allowed but the Magicians made three errors that led to the Masco runs.
Salem 11, Winthrop 5: Shea Christel went 3-for-4 with two RBI and the Witches (5-4) made it four consecutive wins. The pitching trio of Jack Tsoutsouras, Rocco Ryan and Kevin Soto combined for 11 strikeouts while Yan Tejada Ruiz went 2-for-3 with two RBI and JC Vasquez chipped in two hits and drove in a run for Salem, which batted around and scored nine times in the third inning.
Essex Tech 10, Salem Academy 4: Senior Wes Provost struck out 10 in his first career mound victory on Senior Day for the Hawks (5-4). Both Jacoby and Jasper Casinelli Tarasuik, who graduated from Salem Academy middle school and suited up for the Navs, recorded two hits for Essex Tech.
Pingree 14, Wheeler 1: The Highlanders (now 5-3) got a combined five-inning no-hitter from Jonah Richardson (4 IP, 3 K) and Cole Reeves (1 IP, 2 K) while taking full advantage of their eight hits offensively Aidan Horgan was 2-for-2 with a double, a walk and two RBI; Ben Chisholm had a hit and drove home a pair of teammates; Cole Piaseczysnki had a double, a walk, scored a run and drove home two; Jack Spear and Drew Mullaney each had two RBI; Matt McDonald (2 runs) and Anthony Bonacorso (RBI) also had hits; and Calvin Zimmerman, Jimmy Keck, Dan Ferris and Jesse Susko all crossed home plate twice.
St. John’s Prep 7, Cambridge 5: Will Shaheen clocked a 2-run homer, Nic Lembo drove in a pair with a double and James Willett added two hits in a quality home from for the Eagles (4-4). Rowan Cormier picked up the win for St. John’s, which led 7-2 going into the seventh, by scattering four hits over the first four innings.
Arlington Catholic 10, Bishop Fenwick 0: The Crusaders (2-7) were limited to just two hits, singles by Christian Topp and Colin Churches, in a tough one at home. They get a chance for revenge, visiting AC for a rematch on Monday.
GIRLS TENNIS
Masconomet 3, Marblehead 2: With the match tied 2-2 and suspended due to rain last week, Masconomet took a narrow decision with Sophie Donnellan besting Abbie Goodwin in an excellent three-setter 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. The Chieftains won all three singles points and Marblehead swept doubles play.
BOYS TRACK
H-W shines: At the MSCTA’s ‘Invacational’ vacation week invite, Hamilton-Wenham’s Ben Rich won the 800 with a time of 2:00. Also placing for the Generals were Isaac Jones (6th, low hurdles, 60 seconds) and Jake Collins (11th, javelin, 127-08).
Two golds for Prep: Andrew Bertucci won the high jump (6-4) and Kye McClory uncorked an amazing throw of 183-10 to win the javelin at the MSCTA vacation week invite. Ahmir Hykel also medaled for the Eagles, coming in second in the 100 at 11.52.
Mid-Distance Classic: In the invitation meet held at St. John’s Prep, Marblehead’s Will Cerrutti won the mile in 4:19 with teammate Nate Assa in second 4:20. Other locals to make the podium were Peabody’s Declan Smith (fifth in the 800, 1:58) and Essex Tech’s Victor Ortiz was fifth in the shot put.
The host Eagles had a slew of medal winnings, including event winners Henry Barone (long jump, triple jump) and Anthony Ragosa (shot put). Daniel Padley (800, 1:56) and Doug Clement (400) claimed second place points.
GIRLS TRACK
Generals earn medals: Asa Labell (11:45) and Charlotte Madden (12:16) went 2-3 in the 2-mile at the MSCTA’s ‘Invacational’ vacation week invite. Grace Rich picked up third in the mile (5:21) while Caroline Monahan was third in the low hurdles (70.39) as well as tenth in the 400.
Masconomet does well: At the MSCTA’s ‘Invacational’ vacation week invite, the Chieftains saw Piper Testa grab silver in the 200 (26.76) and Ada Paglierani earn second in the low hurdles (70.07). Amanda Schneider made the podium in fifth in the 200 and Mara Siewko was crowned champion of the pentathlon with 2995 points.
Gold for Tech’s Kiesel: In the mid-distance classic at St. John’s Prep, Essex Tech’s Nora Kisel won the 200 in a time of 25.84 while Olivia Feudo also finished second in the 400 in 62 seconds. Mila Crosscup-Flemming also medaled in the shot put, coming in second place.
Elsewhere in the meet, Masconomet’s Savannah Stevens placed second in the 800 (2:23).
BOYS LACROSSE
Essex Tech 10, Hamilton-Wenham 9: Mason Gadbois had two goals with three assists while teammates Tyler McHugh and Chase Ruberti both added two goals of their own to go with one assist as the Hawks captured a Cape Ann League nailbiter. Colby Collins scored his first varsity goal in the victory as well. Timothy Tavares added a goal and three helpers for Essex Tech (now 5-4), with Nevin Maher and Casey Collins each adding one tally and one assist. Joe Dresser, the freshman goalie, made 13 stops.
Playing its best game of the season, the Generals (0-8) saw Billy Brown score four goals and assist on another while both Zach Sachsel (assist) and captain Charlie Convey connected on two goals apiece. Drew Tersolo also rippled the twine for Hamilton-Wenham, with Jackson Pitkin making a dozen saves.
Gloucester 11, Salem 10 (OT): Despite four goals and two assists from Andreas Bernal, the Witches dropped a heartbreaker after falling behind early, catching up, but surrendering the decisive tally in the extra session. Goalkeeper Vincent Milano made 12 saves for Salem (4-6), with Gabe Bennett (2 goals, 2 assists), AJ Alessi (goal, 3 assists), Mikey Curtin (2 goals, assist), Jake Lister (goal, assist) and Fionn Coughlin (assist) also getting on the scoresheet.
Masconomet 9, Beverly 5: The Chieftains (7-2 overall) remained unbeaten in Northeastern Conference competition as Colin Driscoll scored three times and both John Miga and Colten Russo had two tallies and one helper. Tony Giacchino and Jack Fabiano also scored for the winners, with assists going to Will Carey (11-for-18 on faceoffs), Mike McNamee, Connor Mitchell and Tyler Guaranga. Goaltender Michael Kenny also had one assist while stopping 14 shots.
Lucas Carbone continued to shine between the pipes for Beverly, finishing with 20 saves. Connor Wallace had two goals, Anthony Barror, Will Johnson and Kaleb Kaplan had one each, and Will Burgess had one assist for the Panthers (0-7).
Peabody 10, Danvers 6: Aidan Haight made 20 saves in net and Antonio Anzalone scored three times as the Tanners (5-3) won their third straight. Jayden Kritikos finished with two goals and two assists, Nathan Carne added a goal and three helpers and Stephen Brown also had two goals to pace the offense. Derek Collins had a goal and one assist, Matt Vaz added one goal, and solo assists were credited to Tyson Higgins, Joe Vaz and Mason Clickstein.
Aidan Perry came up with nine stops in net for the Falcons (4-5), with goals going to Tyler Moody (3), Connor Harvey (2) and Cooper Dunham. Ben Campbell and Harvey finished with one assist each.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Andover 3, Essex Tech 1: The Hawks battled for four competitive sets before falling in a non-league clash.
COLLEGE SOFTBALL
Gordon sweeps: The Fighting Scots celebrated Senior Day by taking two from Thomas, 5-4 and 4-3. Senior Ami Rivera homered and also collected her 200th career hit for Gordon, which walked off in game one. Fellow seniors Emily Peterson, Mackenzie Murray and Madison Murray all had at least one hit between the two contests.
COLLEGE BASEBALL
Salem State 8, Worcester State 3: Cam Fisher lasted for eight innings, striking out five and earning a key league win for Salem State (now 14-14). Owen Duggan hit a double and had two RBI for the Vikings and Connor Dolan also drove in a pair.
