SHORT GAP, W.Va. — Jaxon Hare threw a gem and Blake Jacobs tallied three hits to lead Frankfort to a 4-0 win over Lewis County to open the Class AAA, Region II playoffs on Monday.
The Falcons (18-7) scored a run in the third inning and broke the game open with a three-run fifth. Uriah Cutter had a two-run single.
Hare tossed 6 2/3 shutout innings of three-hit ball, striking out five and walking one. With the bases loaded and two outs in the seventh, Lanson Orndorf (Charleston commit) induced a groundout to end the game and pick up a save.
Jacobs was 3 for 4 with a double and scored twice, and Jacob Nething had two hits and two RBIs.
Ryder Aman took the loss for Lewis County, allowing four runs on nine hits in six innings.
Frankfort awaits the winner of Keyser and Robert C. Byrd, which was moved to Tuesday due to rain on Monday.
Petersburg 13, Braxton County 3
PETERSBURG, W.Va. — Petersburg’s bats stayed hot, racking up 13 hits en route to a six-inning victory over Braxton County in the Class AA, Region II playoffs on Monday.
Payton Metheny and Lukas Wolford had three hits apiece for the Vikings (18-5), and Owen Reel and Matthew McDonald had two apiece. Wolford and Reel drove in three runs each, and Peyton Tingler and McDonald both scored three runs.
Kaleb Kuhn pitched a complete game to earn the win. The right-hander allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits with five strikeouts to one walk in six innings of work.
Logan Baldwin and Luke Kelly singled and doubled for Braxton County.
Petersburg continues its playoff run at South Harrison on Tuesday night.
Lincoln 7, Hampshire 3
SHINNSTON, W.Va. — Hampshire led at the midway point, but Lincoln scored five runs in the fourth inning to win in the Class AAA, Region II playoffs on Monday.
Mark Richman doubled to score the Trojans’ first run and another crossed on a Landon Whitacre single to give Hampshire (9-16) a 2-0 lead after its first at-bat.
Hampshire got the first two outs of the fourth inning before five runs came home. An error gave Lincoln the lead at 3-2, and another mistake one batter later plated two more.
Richman was dealt the loss, though just two of the six runs he allowed in five innings were earned.
Jaxson Poe had three RBIs to lead Lincoln.
Hampshire hosts Berkeley Springs in an elimination game on Tuesday.
South Harrison 7, Moorefield 2
LOST CREEK, W.Va. — South Harrison jumped out to a 4-0 lead and tacked on three in the sixth to beat Moorefield in a Class AA, Region II playoff game Monday.
Layton Wageman belted two home runs to lead the South Harrison offense.
Seth Gain tossed a gem on the mound, allowing two runs on five hits in 6 2/3 innings pitched to register as the winning arm.
Ben Watts doubled for Moorefield (4-22), and Oliver Crites had two hits.
Moorefield plays an elimination game against Braxton County on Tuesday.
Cumberland Valley 11, Calvary 3
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — Calvary fell to Cumberland Valley in the opening round of the Mason-Dixon Christian Conference tournament on Monday.
Cumberland Valley scored five runs in the first inning, and its three arms held Calvary (1-10) to three runs on six hits.
Nathan Minner belted a three-run homer during Cumberland Valley’s hot start.
Easton Wagner had two hits and two runs batted in for Calvary, and Riley O’Brien scored twice.
