SHORT GAP, W.Va. — Frankfort and Keyser opened the cross country season in the Mineral County Dual Meet at Frankfort on Thursday.
The event also included Frankfort and Keyser Middle Schools, serving as the inaugural event for sanctioned middle school cross country in Mineral County.
The Keyser High boys won the dual meet for the first time since 2015, edging out Frankfort by three points.
The Frankfort High girls won for a seventh consecutive year, winning by an 11-point margin.
Keyser Middle won the boys race while Frankfort took the girls race.
In the high school girls race, Frankfort’s Bailey Ferguson and Paisley Raines gave Frankfort a 1-2 punch with Ferguson winning the meet in a time of 21:35 while Raines finished in 22 minutes.
Keyser’s Mya Burgess (23:17.7) finished in third to lead the Tornado while Frankfort’s Hailey McBride (23:40.4) finished fourth.
Keyser took fifth and sixth behind Ava Barrick (23:45.6) and Hayleigh Haggerty (24:38.8), respectively.
Frankfort’s Hayle Yarbrough (25:00.6) and Bailey Harris (25:04.3) and Keyser’s Ainsley Friend (25:23.3) and Evelyn Cole (25:26.4) rounded out the top 10.
In the high school boys race, Keyser’s Luca Altobello, Class AAA’s sixth-ranked runner, won with a time of 16:54.
It’s the sixth-fastest time in course history.
Frankfort’s Gavin McDonald, Class AA’s third-ranked runner, finished second at 17:14.2.
The Falcons took the next two spots with Mac Alexander (18:32.4) in third and Johnny Jackson (19:24.8) in fourth.
Keyser sealed the meet by taking the next five spots.
Don Starcher (19:42.9) finished fifth, Ashtin Thomas (20:03.68) sixth, Tatum Thompson (20:06.9) seventh, Austin Umstot (20:24.8) eighth and Reed Starcher (20:41.4) ninth.
Haven Stanton from the Falcons (20:57.8) rounded out the top 10.
Frankfort’s Paul Umstead won the middle school boy’s race, timing at 13:13.2.
Teagun Alexander of Frankfort won the middle school girl’s race at 16:32.8.
Keyser competes at the Knights Night Relay on Saturday at Preston against 17 other schools including Hampshire.
Frankfort competes at the Ashley-White Invite in Alliance, Ohio, next Saturday.
