Historic Rugby will celebrate the legacy of its founder, British author and social reformer Thomas Hughes (1822-1897), during its annual Founder’s Day celebration from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. EDT Saturday, Oct. 3.
The free, family-friendly event will feature live music, regional artisans, food trucks, historic exhibits, and special recognition of a modern-day individual whose contributions have helped preserve and advance the historic village.
Founded in 1880 as an experimental British settlement on the Cumberland Plateau, Rugby is one of Tennessee’s most unique historic communities. Founder’s Day celebrates Hughes’ vision while also recognizing the volunteers, supporters, and preservationists who continue to ensure the village’s future.
Visitors can browse artwork and handcrafted goods from regional artists and crafters at the Visitor Centre, enjoy food from on-site vendors, and explore Historic Rugby’s museums, shops, and historic buildings.
At noon EDT, the Rugby Cornet Band will perform from the porch of the Harrow Road Public House, entertaining guests with traditional favorites including America, Take Me Out to the Ballgame, Shenandoah, Goober Peas, and marches. Band members travel from communities across the region, including Allardt, Jamestown, Crossville, Fairfield Glade, and Cookeville.
History enthusiasts will also have the opportunity to preview “Rugby Revisited,” a new photography exhibit opening in October at the Board of Aid to Land Ownership Building. The exhibit features more than 90 historic photographs documenting life in Rugby from approximately 1880 through 1930 and will be open free of charge on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays throughout October.
Coffee lovers can stop by a special preview of Tom Brown’s Coffeehouse, which will soon open in Historic Rugby.
As part of the day’s festivities, Christ Church Episcopal will host its 20th annual Michaelmas Tea at the Friendly House behind the church. Seatings are available at noon and 2:30 p.m. EDT. Tickets are $20 per person, and reservations are recommended as space is limited. To reserve, call 423-628-6250 or email Bethany at rjackson@highland.net.
Admission to Founder’s Day is free.
