POTOMAC PARK — Mountain District champion Fort Cumberland Post 13 concluded league play with a 6-3 victory over Garrett County Post 71/208/214 on Wednesday at Memorial Field.
Fort Cumberland, 10-5 overall and 7-2 in the district, will host a state tournament play-in game against an opponent to be determined on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Memorial Field.
Post 13 scored three runs in the second and third innings Wednesday to build a 6-0 lead. Kohen Madden went 2 for 3 with a triple and an RBI, Cade Bauer doubled, singled and drove in two, and Myles Bascelli garnered a ribbie.
Coye Resh got the ball for Fort Cumberland to start in a no-decision, allowing two runs on a hit in 3 1/3 innings with a strikeout and two walks.
Peyton Blocher pitched 3 2/3 innings of relief, giving up a run on two hits with three strikeouts to four walks to register as the winning arm.
Garrett’s Peyton Shaffer had two RBIs, Bailey Turner drove in one, and Liam Stewart singled twice.
Stewart was dealt the loss after giving up six runs (three earned) on five hits with three strikeouts and three walks in three frames.
Jake Chambers pitched three shutout, no-hit innings in relief.
If Fort Cumberland wins the play-in game, it will face the Frank Riley League champion (Southern Maryland) on Friday, July 24, at 10 a.m. at Joe Cannon Stadium in Hanover.
The double-elimination tournament runs July 24-28.
Potomac Valley 3, Berkeley 0
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Lanson Orndorf tossed a complete-game shutout to power Potomac Valley Post 64 to a win over Berkeley Post 14 in Game 1 of the West Virginia Area 4 championship series Wednesday at P.O. Faulkner Park.
Both teams have already qualified for the West Virginia state tournament that will be hosted by Beckley Post 32 from July 23-26.
Orndorf pitched seven innings of five-hit ball, striking out five and walking two.
All five base hits were singles and by five different players.
Orndorf’s future University of Charleston teammate Blake Jacobs drove in two of Potomac Valley’s runs, and Hunter Harr plated the other.
Berkeley’s Jamere Brown, who is signed to Shepherd University, was dealt the loss on the bump despite a solid start in which he gave up three runs (two earned) on four hits with seven strikeouts to one walk in six innings.
Connor Smith tossed a scoreless seventh in relief.
