Starpoint went in, looking to take down Sweet Home on the road in a highly anticipated Class A2 match-up. But when the Spartans needed a score, they couldn’t deliver.
Three trips to the red zone ended in no points as the Spartans lost to the Panthers, 14-7, Friday in Amherst. Trailing 6-0, Starpoint scored its lone touchdown of the contest as Lucas Lombardo had a five-yard touchdown run for a 7-6 lead in the second quarter.
Sweet Home quarterback Rocco Panepinto delivered the go-ahead score, a 5-yard touchdown pass to Daquan Stone, followed by a two-point conversion to Niear Patterson with 6:59 left in the third quarter. Panepinto finished 14 of 22 passing and 160 yards with two touchdowns.
For Starpoint, A.J. Anselm recorded six carries for 114 yards, while Joe Richardson added 20 carries for 86 yards. Starpoint falls to 4-3 on the season, while Sweet Home improves to 6-1.
Grand Island 27, Williamsville East 0
Dominic Nucci scored two touchdowns to lead the Vikings back into the win column in a non-league contest. The fullback scored on consecutive drives, from 4-yards and 1-yard out, to give the Vikings a 14-0 lead with 7:51 left in the second quarter and now has 11 rushing scores on the season.
Running back Michael Sole scored a touchdown and rushed for 133 yards, while quarterback Nik Korte went 8 of 10 passing for 66 yards, including a 25-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Kozlowski. Jacob Brzyski recorded a team-high eight tackles.
Grand Island improves to 4-3, while Williamsville East falls to 3-4.
Roy-Hart/Barker 26, Tonawanda 14
The Bulls recorded a second straight win and qualified for the Chuck Funke Class C Bowl with a victory over the Timberwolves. Roy-Hart/Barker relied on quarterback Tysen McCaa to generate its offense.
The junior quarterback recorded two rushing touchdowns and accounted for 131 of Roy-Hart/Barker’s 246 rushing yards and threw a 26-yard score to Ashton Ark. The Bulls defense recorded three tturnovers, including two interceptions.
Ark scored a 73-yard interception return, while Jackson West recorded an interception and Wyatt Sherman recorded a fumble recovery.
Tonawanda quarterback Cole Keleman went 12 of 21 passing for 191 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Tim Domon recorded five catches for 139 yards, while Markel Whittman had a team-high 21 tackles
Roy-Hart improves to 2-5 on the season, while Tonawanda is now 0-7.
Bennett 47, Lockport 7
Bennett erupted to a 33-0 lead at halftime, thanks to four first half touchdown passes from quarterback Jordan Freeman in the Class AA contest. The Tigers later added a 79-yard kickoff return touchdown from E’Ryan Lawrence to take a 47-7 lead with 1:59 left in the third quarter.
For Lockport, Scott Stowe threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to Camryn Chinn to cut its deficit to 40-7 with 2:22 left in the third quarter. The touchdown pass was Stowe’s sixth in the last three games.
Bennett improves to 6-1 on the season, while Lockport falls to 1-6.
