NEWBURYPORT — An early evening house fire claimed the life of a dog Monday on Broad Street, according to first responders.
Local firefighters, aided by Salisbury and Amesbury Fire Department teams, descended upon 15 Broad St. shortly before 6 p.m.
Upon arrival, crews spotted smoke coming out the front door. Firefighters quickly attacked the blaze and contained it to a laundry and pantry area in the rear of the house. Heat and smoke damage extended throughout the house.
Firefighters attempted to revive a dog found inside the home with CPR before stopping after 20 minutes. No one was home at the time, according to Newburyport fire Chief Stephen Bradbury III.
Police cordoned off a large portion of the cut-through road between High and Merrimac streets near Newburyport High School as firefighters ventilated the home and searched for hot spots.
Station coverage was provided by firefighters from Rowley and Seabrook, N.H.
The fire does not appear to be suspicious. The Newburyport Fire Department continues to investigate the cause, according to firefighters.
