CUMBERLAND — A firefighter was injured Tuesday morning while battling a garage fire in Bowman’s Addition, according to officials.
The fire was first reported to the Allegany County Joint Communications Center just after 8:30 a.m. at 11317 Silver Ave., off Amherst Avenue.
“It was well involved with fire by the time the first units arrived,” Jeremy Jack, deputy chief with the Bowman’s Addition Volunteer Fire Company, said. “The fire was in a two-car detached garage.”
The Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal said the fire started in the rear of the 20-by-20 building, and the cause remained under investigation. Damage was estimated at $75,000.
Jack said the fire was isolated to the garage with no extension to any other structures.
Power lines had fallen across the road leading into the scene, causing fire apparatus and firefighters to maneuver around the lines to begin extinguishing the fire, according to Jack.
Units from Bowman’s Addition, Bedford Road, Baltimore Pike, Corriganville, Ellers- lie, District 16, Cumberland, LaVale, Ridgeley from Mineral County in West Virginia and ambulances from LaVale and Allegany County Department of Emergency Services responded.
Jack said it took 25 firefighters 35 to 45 minutes to control the blaze.
The injured firefighter was taken to UPMC Western Maryland, Jack said.
“(The firefighter) was stable and in good spirits,” Jack said, after contacting him in the emergency room.
