WEST NEWBURY — Firefighters from several communities battled a garage fire Sunday morning on Church Street.
No one was reported injured but the two-alarm fire destroyed the detached garage at 79 Church St.
“Thanks to the quick response of our firefighters and mutual aid partners, we were able to contain this fire to the garage and prevent it from spreading to the nearby home,” Fire Chief Michael Dwyer said in a news release.
“We are grateful that no one was injured and appreciate the assistance we received from surrounding departments,” he added.
The blaze broke out shortly before 9 a.m. with firefighters arriving to find the garage engulfed in flames that were spreading to a vehicle outside the building, Dwyer said. The Fire Department received multiple 911 calls from people reporting the fire.
Due to the fire’s extent, firefighters immediately began a defensive attack and requested assistance from neighboring communities, the chief said.
The garage’s roof collapsed, and firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control about 9:19 a.m., Dwyer said.
Along with West Newbury, firefighters responded from Newburyport, Groveland, Newbury, Georgetown, Amesbury and Merrimac in addition to Atlantic Ambulance.
Station coverage was provided by the Georgetown, Newbury, Merrimac, Rowley and Boxford fire departments. West Newbury’s electrical inspector also responded to the fire.
State police assigned to the Massachusetts State Fire Marshal’s Office are the investigating the fire’s cause along with the West Newbury Police and Fire departments.
