FROSTBURG — A fire in an off-campus student apartment building Saturday evening is being investigated by the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal.
The fire at 19 Bobcat Court, near the Frostburg State University campus, was reported by an occupant in the neighboring apartment and quickly brought under control once firefighters arrived, said Frostburg Fire Department Capt. Mike Smith.
“We found a working fire on the exterior of the apartment on the second floor,” Smith said. “There was slight extension to the third floor.”
Smith said that most of the damage was to the exterior of the building.
Frostburg State University Police evacuated occupants from the building prior to the fire department’s arrival, Smith said.
The Allegany County Joint Communications Center received the first call reporting the blaze at approximately 7:45 p.m., according to a center spokesperson.
“There were no occupants in the apartment where the fire occurred,” Smith said.
Two college students were displaced.
The fire marshal’s office was requested to investigate the cause of the fire, Smith said.
Approximately 18 firefighters were on the scene, according to Smith. Many of the responding units were canceled while responding because of the quick control of the blaze by the first-arriving units.
Units from Frostburg, Mount Savage, Midland, Eastern Garrett, Shaft, LaVale, Lonaconing, Ridgeley, ambulances from Allegany County Department of Emergency Services and LaVale Rescue responded.
No injuries were reported, Smith said.
