AMESBURY — The area around California Street was closed to traffic Tuesday around 9 a.m. for much of the morning following a crash between the driver of a garbage truck and a young bicyclist.
Local firefighters and police officers responded to the intersection of California Street and California Lane at 8:52 a.m., for a report of a person struck by G. Mello waste disposal truck. Upon arrival, rescuers located a 9-year-old boy who was suffering from serious injuries.
The boy was conscious and alert and was able to communicate with rescuers. An Amesbury Fire Department ambulance crew transported the boy to Portsmouth Regional Hospital where he was last reported to be in stable condition. The boy is expected to be transferred to a Boston hospital for treatment of his injuries, according to Fire Chief James Nolan.
The driver, who was collecting curbside trash on behalf of the city, remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities.
The incident is under investigation by the Amesbury police and fire departments with assistance from the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section.
An Amesbury police report will be available once the investigation is complete, according to officials.
