Five prolific goal scorers and a record-setting quarterback lead off the fall version of The Daily Star’s Athletic of the Week Award.
This week’s award is sponsored by Reinhart Home Heating.
The nominees for the week ending Saturday, Sept. 5, are:
Jaylee Kelley, South Kortright/Andes girls soccer: The Rams sophomore had a great start to the season, helping SK/A to reach the finals of the Stamford Mayor’s Cup. Kelley had two goals in the Rams 7-2 opening-round win over Gilboa-Conesville/Roxbury on Sept. 1. She followed that with two goals and an assist in her squad’s 3-1 semifinal win over Laurens on Sept. 5.
Shannon Kingsbury, Unatego/Franklin girls soccer: Kingsbury, Franklin’s senior star had a milestone week as she adjusted to playing with the combined Spartan Devils team for the first time. She had four goals and an assist in U/F’s 7-1 opening-round win over Margaretville in the Stamford Mayor’s Cup on Sept. 1. Four days later, in the semifinals against Charlotte Valley/Schenevus, Kingsbury had five goals, including netting her 200th varsity score.
Jordan Odell, Charlotte Valley/Schenevus girls soccer: Odell, a sophomore from Charlotte Valley, also had a great start to the season at the Mayor’s Cup. She had four goals and an assist in the Valor’s 5-1 opening-round win over Milford on Aug. 31. Odell also scored in a loss to Schohaire last week.
Gabe Cirigliano, Sidney boys soccer: Cirigliano, a senior, had a dominant game Sept. 2, as the Sabers began their season with an 8-1 win over visiting Sharon Springs. Cirigliano scored three goals and had four assists in the win.
Chase Jervis, Oneonta football: Jervis, a junior quarterback, threw for five touchdowns and 371 yards in Oneonta’s season-opening win over Greene on Sept. 4, at Lloyd F. Baker Field. School officials believe he set a program record for most yards passing in a single game. The previous record was set by James Champen in the late 1990s.
Brock Redner, Edmeston boys soccer: Edmeston looks like the team to beat in Class D soccer and Redner, a senior midfielder/striker is one of the reasons why the Panthers look so good. He had two goals and two assists in the opening-round of the Stamford Mayor’s Cup on Aug. 31, as Edmeston topped SK/A, 7-0. Edmeston then beat Unatego/Franklin in the third round of the tournament, 5-1, on Sept. 5. Redner again had two goals and two assists in the win, positioning Edmeston to repeat as the Mayor’s Cup champions.
Voting begins at midnight Saturday, Sept. 12, and runs through noon, Thursday, Sept. 17. Results will be announced online Friday, Sept. 18, and in the weekend edition of The Daily Star on Saturday, Sept. 18.
