ESSEX — For James Owen McKenna of Essex, the future looks bright.
McKenna, a junior at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, was recently awarded the Bob and Lynne Pollack Award for Outstanding Achievement in Actuarial Science from the faculty of the school’s Mathematics and Statistics Department.
The award presentation took place during a department year-end ceremony earlier this month.
Actuarial science is the application of mathematical and statistical methods to assess risk in insurance, pension, finance, investment and other industries and professions. Actuaries use this science to formulate policies that minimize risk and its financial impact on companies and clients.
McKenna intends to work as an intern this summer with the Boston-based management consulting firm Oliver Wyman. He also plans to play baseball with the Manchester Mariners of the Cape Ann Men’s League.
He is a graduate of Philips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire, and the Brookwood School in Manchester-by-the-Sea.
