The Kiwanis Club of Traverse City recognized the following as “Student of the Month” for this week:
Cameron Slaggert is a senior at Traverse City West Senior High School. Cameron is a member of National Honor Society, Women’s Business Club, National Spanish Honors Society, and Kiwanis Key Club. She has participated in varsity soccer all four years. Honors received include Academic Award (4 years), Athletics Academic Award (4 years), Graduating Summa Cum Laude, All-District team, Record-Eagle Dream Team, Big North Conference team for soccer. Cameron maintains a 3.90 GPA and plans to attend Michigan State’s Lyman Briggs Residential College to major in Biology with an Optometry track.
Noah Dumon is a senior at Traverse City West Senior High School. Noah is a member of National Honor Society. He has participated in varsity football, lacrosse, baseball and track. Honors received include: honor roll, Academic All-State, All-Conference for football, Student of the Week TCW High School. Noah maintains a 3.89 GPA and plans to attend Hope College to study pre-Physical Therapy and Business while playing football there.
The annual Outstanding Persons in Education Banquet took place April 24 at Caberfae Peaks Ski Resort, sponsored by the 15-B Coordinating Council which is made up of Michigan Education Association (MEA) members from Baldwin, Buckley, Cadillac, Evart, Forest Area, Kingsley, Manton, Marion, McBain, Mecosta-Osceola Intermediate School District, Mesick, Pine River and Reed City with more than 600 members. Honorees are nominated by their peers. Nine teachers, five support staff, and six Friends of Education were honored. Tiyi Schippers, retired teacher from Pine River EA, was the emcee. This was the 48th year that the MEA 15-B office has organized this event. Michigan Education Special Services Association (MESSA) and MEA Financial Services sponsored the banquet, which was attended by honorees, their friends and family, union members, MEA-Retired members, and other school staff.
The Outstanding Persons in Education were: Heather Horn-Buckley, Tom Ouwinga and Lori Goodrich-Cadillac, Josh Johnson and Carol Reedy-Evart, Melissa Tengdin-Forest Area, Lindsey Embrey-Manton, Mary Bell-Marion, Brandy Baas-McBain, Megan Gebhardt-Mecosta-Osceola ISD, Catherine Roda and Deb Robinson-Mesick, Eric Gebhard and Katie Martin-Pine River. Jillian Bronkema, a teacher from McBain; Lisa Morrison, support staff from Reed City; and Lisa and John Stadtfeld, volunteers from the Mecosta-Osceola ISD, will be honored in separate ceremonies at their districts. Friends of Education honored were: Kelly Whitman-Cadillac, Tina Young-Evart, Kristine Simpson-Forest Area, Marion Athletic Boosters, Mesick Lions Club, and Heather Smith-Pine River.
The Traverse City Branch of the American Association of University Women recently awarded a $2,000 scholarship to each of three area university students for the 2025-2026 school year. Lydia Bissonette of Kalkaska received the Minnie Votruba Moore Scholarship to assist her continuing study of a degree in Communications at Grand Valley State University.
The recipients of the AAUWTC Branch scholarships are Desiree Morgan, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Northern Michigan University, and Alexandria Dubois, who is studying at Grand Valley State University to become a Physician Assistant. Both live in Traverse City.
