EFFINGHAM — When rivalry games are played, anything can happen.
That was the case on Tuesday night between Effingham and St. Anthony at Effingham High School.
The Flaming Hearts did win in two sets, 25-12, 27-25, but the second set proved to be more of a battle.
“I asked the girls at the end of (the game) what the difference was between that first set where we got smoked and the second set where we took them to 27-25?” head coach Amy Walk said. “Basically, it was the little things. It was communication, covering and passing. It was believing in ourselves.”
Lilly Gannaway finished with 11 digs. Cara Hatton had seven kills, 11 digs and three blocked shots. Sophia Emmerich had two kills, one dig and four blocked shots. Addi Nuxoll had five kills, 12 digs and four blocked shots. Audrey LaSarge had two blocked shots. Nancy Ruholl had 12 assists, five digs and one blocked shot. Kallie Kabbes had one service ace. Annabelle Weishaar had five digs and Reese Hoene had two digs and two kills for the Bulldogs (1-1).
Averie Wolfe had three assists and eight digs for the Flaming Hearts (3-0). Sidney Donaldson had five kills, eight blocked shots and two digs. Berkley Pullen had one kill, one service ace, 13 assists and two digs and Hannah Thompson had one kill, 14 assists and eight digs.
“I’d like to think I led the court well,” Thompson said. “I hit the pins each time that we needed it most, and our hitters were the ones who put it down.”
Bria Beals added three kills, one service ace, one blocked shot and five digs. Reaghan DeLong had four kills, two blocked shots and one dig. Alyssa Martin had one service ace. Korina Hecht had one dig. Bella Austin had 10 kills, one assist and five digs. McKenzie Love had six kills and five blocked shots and Ashlyn Davis had one kill and one dig.

BASEBALL
at Evergreen Hollow Park … The St. Anthony Bulldogs defeated the North Clay Cardinals, 12-2.
Sam Link had two hits (one double) and four RBIs. Will Fearday had two hits (one double) and three RBIs. Brock Fearday hit a double and a home run and had two RBIs. Aiden Lauritzen had two hits and one RBI. Vincent Vogel hit two doubles. Brady Hatton had one hit and Henry Brent had one RBI for St. Anthony (7-1, 3-0 National Trail Conference).
Lauritzen pitched for the Bulldogs. He allowed five hits, two runs and one walk to eight strikeouts in five innings.
As for North Clay (3-2, 1-1 National Trail), Cody Zimdarsr had two hits (one home run) and two RBIs. Ian Jones hit a double and Cayden Craig and Ethan Sullens had one hit.
Zimdars started for the Cardinals. He allowed seven hits, six runs (two earned) and three walks to two strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings. Talon Hemphill, Brodie Adair and Keegan Sullens relieved him. Hemphill pitched 1/3 of an inning. Adair allowed four hits, six runs and three walks in 1/3 of an inning and Sullens threw three pitches in his outing.
at Altamont … The Altamont Indians defeated the Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg Hatchets, 3-0.
Kade Milleville had two hits. Parker Bell had one hit and two RBIs. Zaine Miller had one hit and one RBI and Brayden Elam, Blake Berg and Dyson Wagner had one hit for Altamont (3-3, 2-1 National Trail Conference).
Milleville pitched for the Indians. He allowed two hits with eight strikeouts in seven innings.
As for Windsor (1-4, 1-2 National Trail), Branson Tingley and Carter Verdeyen had one hit.
Kendall Morris pitched. He allowed seven hits, three runs and three walks to seven strikeouts in six innings.
BOYS GOLF
at St. Elmo Golf Club … The Newton Eagles finished second and the Altamont Indians third at the Altamont quadrangular match at St. Elmo Golf Club.
Newton fired a team score of 170. Altamont was at 199.
Michael Kennedy shot a final round of 38. Gunner James shot a 41. Blaine Bergbower shot a 44 and Wade Wickham shot a 45. The scores that didn’t count were Jackson James’ 47, Grant Fulton’s 50 and Evan Johnson’s 51.
VOLLEYBALL
at Teutopolis … The Teutopolis Lady Shoes defeated Marshall in two sets. T-Town won the first set 25-5 and the second 25-9.
Megan Brummer had three blocked shots, one dig, three kills and seven service aces. Olivia Cates had six digs and four service aces. Kaitlyn Horn had one service ace. Kaylie Jordan had one dig, one service ace and three assists. Madison Miller had two blocked shots, three digs and two kills. Elise Pals had one kill. Claresa Ruholl had 10 digs, one service ace and two assists. Gabby Tegeler had five digs and six kills. Marie Zumbahlen had three kills and Sara Zumbahlen had four digs, three kills and 13 assists.
at Beecher City … The Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City Bobcats defeated Bethany (Okaw Valley) in two sets. CHBC won the first set 25-20 and the second 25-14.
Gracie Wright had two service aces, six assists and five digs. Ellie Miller had two kills, two service aces and two digs. Kyleigh Wallace had six kills, one assist and three blocked shots. Haley Doty had one kill, one service ace, one assist and one dig. Birgen Schlanser had one service ace and seven digs. Macee Rodman had two kills and six digs. Allison Shields had one blocked shot and one dig. Madison Dawson had one kill, one blocked shot and one dig. Lizzie Parks had one dig and Addison Wasson had one dig for the Bobcats (2-1).
